The Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack fund aimed to "...build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples" (The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund). Downie achieved this goal and more. “$173-million over three years to provide clean and safe drinking water in indigenous communities

$447 million over five years for an indigenous skills and employment training program

$10 million this year to support Metis nation priorities

About $1.5 billion over five years to support indigenous health

and $143 million over five years to support the expansion of the First Nations Land Management Act” (CBC News).

Gord Downie was the lead singer of the 1983 Kingston-based band, The Tragically Hip. After being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2015, Downie made the most of his final years. He used his fame and musical talent to fight for indigenous rights and reconciliation, before passing at the age of 53.

Chanie Wenjack's passing was an unjust one. After enduring the trauma of a residential school in northern Ontario, 12 year old Chanie managed to escape in 1966. Faced with harsh weather conditions and an empty stomach, he embarked upon a 600 kilometer trek home, only to be met with a terrible fate. After stumbling upon Chanie's story, Downie's strong moral compass directed him on the path to seek justice for Canada's indigenous community, or rather, the Secret Path. ("Chanie Wenjack" The Canadian Encyclopedia).

Gord Downie was an influential individual. His ability to inspire others assisted him on his journey to spread awareness. He communicated his concern for indigenous rights and reconciliation by reaching out to the public through his art. Downie told Chanie Wenjack's story within his fourth solo album Secret Path, but didn't stop there. He went on to create a graphic novel with illustrator Jeff Lemire. Grateful for Downie's contributions to indigenous rights and reconciliation, the Assembly of First Nations honored Gord Downie on stage at his Secret Path concert.
