What I found most profound in the resources I reviewed was the concept of filling one's emotional "bucket" from the article on the Importance of Self Care. I've never thought about it in that way-- how we, as a helping profession, are constantly pouring out of our "bucket." However, in order to continue to pour into others, we must continuously fill our bucket with healing, self care practices.

I think that self care is essential in helping professions because it helps us improve in our practice with our students. We can preach self care and coping mechanisms to them all day long, but if we don't practice them ourselves, we aren't truly helping our students or ourselves.

One strategy I can use to practice self-care is finding a relaxing daily activity to do to decompress, such as simple coloring books or a walk around my neighborhood. Another strategy I can use to practice self-care is by attending therapy regularly to process secondary trauma and any compassion fatigue or burnout I may be experiencing. A third strategy I can use is creating a daily gratitude journal to keep myself focused on things I am thankful for both in my career and in my personal life.
