I washed the hair, then added mousse to towel dried hair. I picked a medium roller to use on long hair to create volume and a loose curl. I used the brick technique so not to cause unwanted partings in the hair and set the rollers on base to add maximum volume to the roots. Once all rollers had been pinned, I used an elephant attachment with the hair dryer to dry the hair. Once dried I removed the rollers from the back to the front to avoid tangling the hair. I brushed out the curls to the clients desired look and hair sprayed the style to hold in place.

Finger waves created on wet hair, I used mousse and wax as I didn’t have any setting lotion or gel at home. I was struggling with the mousse alone as it wouldn’t hold the hair in place. I use the body of my comb to create a C shape and placed my middle finger on the hair to hold. I combed the hair to one side and lay the comb flat pinching the hair in between my middle and index finger. I then repeated this moving across the head. I left the hair to dry. I was unable to brush/ dress out the hair as when I brushed the wave came out I think this was because I used wax. I was really pleased with the look and enjoy doing this once I got going. I would like to try this again when I have the correct products so I can see the finished look.

I sectioned the hair into a T section, this is the section of hair people see most. A T section of highlights can be done in between having a full head and is cheeper for the client. I used foils on every other section using the weaving technique. I started with the centre section first and then did the sides. I think I need to practice this a bit more, I think my technique is good but I am not getting it done fast enough.
I rinsed out the foils and washed the hair. I added some mousse before blasting off the hair. Once dry, I curled with hair straighteners. I hair sprayed then with a large comb brushed out the curls for a casual beach wave. I then added a bit of salt spray to the hair to finish.

10/05/2020 VE Day / 1940’s Victory roll’s and head scarf

Woman who worked on the fields generally wore their hair in a practical up do, with a scarf to protect their hair. Rolls where very fashionable and victory rolls became an iconic look for woman post 2nd World War. To create this look I needed hair with a bit of hold and texture. Ideally not freshly washed. If it has been then you need to add mousse before drying and / or dry shampoo to dried hair. I parted the hair in a side parting at the arch of the eyebrow and sectioned the hair into 2 front sections from the top of the ear to the parting. I used the dressing out brush to back comb the hair to create volume and lift. I smoothed out the hair you will see at the front with a comb. I then rolled the hair with my fingers into a barrel, removing the hand closest to the ear. I kept my fingers in the top of the roll while smoothing down the side at the ear. When I was happy with my roll I pinned with hair grips. I fiddled a bit with my roll tucking the side at the ear under and teasing the top of the roll out till I had the correct look. I then hair-sprayed in place. I rolled the hair at the back and pinned up before adding the scarf. If you wanted to adapt the look for the evening you could remove the scarf and let down the hair at the back. If it had been pin curled under the scarf all day when dressed out you would have the 40’s waves.
I was really pleased with my look and had a go at victory curls in my own hair for our street party on VE Day. I did find it easier if I used a bit of heat on my own hair to the get the roll going. I curled my hair with the straighteners.

21/05/2020 Cut, one length bob with fringe

One length bob.
I started by washing the hair, towel dried and combed out. I parted the hair and continued this down to the neck. I left a inch to an inch and a half section at the nape of the neck and clipped back the side sections. I cut the first section to the desired length. As I got to the edges, I combed the hair slightly towards me to meet the line I was cutting at. I then worked this way up the back of the head taking half inch sections at a time, cutting with the comb and using the wide tooth end for light tension until I reached the occipital bone.
I then continued on half inch sections combing the hair first, then free hand cutting straight to meet my guide so the hair sat in its natural fall.
I crossed checked the hair lifting hair from either said of the parting. I also checked the hair at the front for length, pulling gently down on the hair and checking in the mirror.
I added some mousse to the damp hair and wrap blow dried using a vented brush. I then used the heated straighteners to smooth and straighten the hair.
I sat on a stool combed the hair and free hand cut any hair that lay uneven. I felt like I could have been doing this for hours. I think I need to have another practice at this cut I found it quite difficult, I haven’t done much free hand cutting before. Maybe it’s a confidence thing. I’m not really happy with the finished look, it doesn’t seem to have a nice finish at the bottom and the bottom sticks out a bit looking bulky. There does seem to be some shorter layers in the hair I think this was from a previous cut.
Fringe.
The hair at the front of my doll always wanted to fall forward into the face so I had a go at adding a fringe. I sectioned of the desired amount of hair. I combed into place and cut straight across, a fraction longer than the desired fringe length. The fringe seemed bulky at the bottom so I sectioned the fringe and trimmed holding the hair between my fingers the bottom layer Of the fringe at a 45 degree angle. Then took the top layer of the fringe and trimmed holding the hair in my fingers at a 90 degree angle. This added some graduation and the fringe sat in a nice curve against the forehead. I neatened up the fringe freehand.

Boho style up do’s are still very popular with wedding and prom hair. I created this simple but effective up do in a couple of minutes. I would advise hair with some texture so ideally not freshly washed. If hair has just been washed, mousse needs to be added when drying. If hair is fine or silky when dry some texture spray, volumising powder or dry shampoo will help.
Comb hair back off the face. Divide hair into 3 sections and tie in a loose ponytail. Push fingers up though the hair between the head and bobble and pull through the ponytail. Using fingers or teasing comb loosen hair that is twisted for a fuller effect. You may need to pull the hair a bit tighter in the bobble while playing with this. When hair has filled out the gaps, plait the 3 tails of hair. Tease the plaited hair for a thicker fuller looking plait, then roll the plait up towards the head. Pin in place, also pin to hide any loose ends or hair sitting out of balance. Spray hair to hold. If desired small amounts of hair could have been left around the face to soften the look. If I had done this I would have loosely curled the hair. To elevate this look small hair gems or flowers depending on the occasion, would look great pinned randomly in the twisted hair.
I really enjoyed doing this and will continue to play with these techniques to create other looks.
