The student followed the text with her finger as she read. I noticed that when she hesitated at a word, she would scan the illustration. Sometimes she would use her fingertip to cover part of a word. I also noticed that she looks to me frequently for affirmation in nonverbal cues as she reads. She read with wonderful expression.

When the student gets hung up, it is typically on VCE words, verbs with endings, and vowel teams. The student is usually pretty good about hearing herself and self-correcting when something doesn't make sense.

The question I have asked is why isn't the student retaining the phonics lessons on VCE and +ed/+ing. Knowing the student has had these lessons repeatedly, how can the students hold onto the strategy for decoding these words?
