Ku Klux Klan (KKK)

This photo is of KKK or the Ku Klux Klan during the 1924 Democratic National Convention who are a group that believe in white supremist. In this picture the group members are wearing white hoods with two holes for them to see out of just like the Hooded Man but theirs have no holes. They are almost in the same posture being Christ like with a flaming cross behind them. In the hooded man photo, the hood was used to almost dehumanize them, and make them seem like animals or non human beings. The KKK group's hoods have eye holes for them to see and this changes that idea of dehumanization and instead hides their identity whilst still leaving them sort of human. The outfits they wore were white and that could symbolize their belief in white supremacy whilst prisoners in Abu Ghraib wore black which could symbolize their racial colour.

Blind - Paul Strand, 1916

This is a picture taken by Paul Strand using a false camera which points in one direction but shoots in another direction. In my opinion, this gives rise to the issue of lack of consent and lack of power in society during the time. I think this image represents the loss of power in individuals because it is one that she had no clue her picture was taken. Additionally, he had also chosen to photograph an already visually disadvantaged individual which shows that he could be consciously targeting more vulnerable people. It is apparent that she couldn't have done anything about it. People in the area also may not have been able to do anything because they didn't know that the focus of the picture was her.

We have chosen the global issue of 'Loss of individuality' from the two previous global issues (Loss of power and Dehumanization)

Why does dehumanization relate to loss of power?
Loss of power can lead to dehumanization. When someone's power and say is taken away, it can be seen as dehumanizing. They are stripped from their rights as a person. They are so negatively looked at to the point where they can be stripped off of their identities. This act dehumanizes them as it does not make them feel human and are not seen by society as an accepted individual.

What is the connection between all the images?
The biggest connection is between Blind by Paul Strand and Ku Klux Klan by an anonymous source. In Blind, the woman is labeled using a cardboard sign and the predominant impression is that she is being visually impaired, or being blind is her biggest quality. Because it is a disability, society may view her derogatorily and this can lead to her being characterized for one disability which can make us make assumptions about her identity. The KKK image encourage white supremacy and that can cause a loss of power in other cultures, colours etc. They are putting a label on themselves as superior to others who are not white. The KKK bombed black schools and churches and was violent against black and white activists. Because they feel that anyone lower than them is inferior, this could be dehumanizing to them to be stripped off of their identity. Additionally, members of the KKK would lose their identity, making them conform to the groups identity instead, and be racist to others.
