Your first paragraph will look a little different this week. Please write the name of the online book (Coming to Detroit) and the genre (non-fiction). Please explain why this is a non-fiction book.

The second paragraph you will need to describe two things you learned about using detail. Then pick a new idea and tell why you found this one the most interesting.

Dear Mrs. Copley,

The name of my book is Coming to Detroit. The genre is non-fiction. This book is non-fiction because it is about real events and real people in the history of Detroit.

One thing I learned was that Detroit was the home of the largest stove making company in the world. I also learned that Detroit made half of the ships on the Great Lakes. The author used a lot of details so I could understand the history of Detroit. The details helped me make a picture of what was happening. What I found most interesting was that Detroit was the home of the largest stove. I found this most interesting because it was cool that it was the world's largest.

From,
Alex

This book is non-fiction because it's about historical events that actually happened in Detroit.
Two things I learned was that Detroit was the largest stove company in the world and Detroit was smelting a lot of copper. Detroit was the largest stove company because the owner made the stoves so high quality that everyone wanted one. Detroit was smelting a lot of copper because it was making pipes, jewelry and wiring. I think it was cool that coal and iron were being produced in Detroit because they made it into a liquid to make stoves. This book is non-fiction because it talks about real businesses in Detroit's past.

I learned a lot, but what I found most interesting were the stoves. People from Detroit had to buy stoves from New York. It took a lot of time and cost a lot of money. A man from New York, named Jeremiah Drayer, knew how to make stoves. He moved to Detroit to start manufacturing stoves in Detroit. People from Detroit and all over Michigan bought stoves from his company. I found this interesting because I know Detroit as a city for car companies instead of stove companies. Another reason I found this interesting is because I thought Jeremiah Drayer could earn more money making stoves in New York. I am so glad I had a chance to learn more about Detroit and it being the home of quality stoves.

From,
Zoe

This book is non-fiction because it is historical about real events that really happened in Detroit.

The thing I found most interesting was the stove company in the 19th century Detroiters purchased a cast iron wooden stove from upstate New York. By 1964 the Detroit Stove Company was noticed for their quality. The company was getting so large that they had to change their name to Michigan Stove Company, and declared Detroit the "stove company of the world." Columbia Exposition in Chicago made the largest stove in the world. The stove weighed 15 tons and stood 25 feet tall. Another thing I found interesting was that in 1817 the city had 14,000 homes, 52 churches, 24 public schools, and 14 hospitals and asylums. Most of the people that live in Detroit are immigrants that live here to day. I am so happy that we get to learn about our own city.
Sincerely,
Emmalynn Moeller
