         <description><![CDATA[<div>Research in the 1950s by cognitive psychologist George A. Miller of Princeton University showed that there was a ‘magic number’ of 7 +/-2 which was the largest number of items humans could hold in their working memories. Neuroscientists today think this number is actually smaller. Memory is a process by which information is encoded, stored and recalled. Psychologists talk about different types of memory when describing this process. Sensory memory, for example, involves the ability to look at an item for less than a second before this can be remembered while short-term, or working, memory describes situations when people can remember items after a few seconds or more. This, as Miller discovered, is limited in capacity. However, Miller suggested that this capacity could be improved if items were ‘chunked’ together to make them more manageable. For example, if someone wishes to recall a nine-digit telephone number this is much easier to do if the number is divided up into three groups of three. So the number 077684567 would be easier to remember if divided as 077 684 567.&nbsp;<br><br>Choose 7 +/-2 key phrases which best summarise the ideas in the text.</div>]]></description>
