If an adolescent experiences trauma they can regress back to their younger selves. What that means is they may begin to wet the bed or suck their thumb. This could also show in adults who cope with stress by playing with toys and/or games.

Denial is common with everyone. It is one of our most go to defense mechanisms as a race. If they just ignore the problem like it does not exist it will just go away. That is obviously not the case. Denial looks like the mom that so badly wants to believe their child is telling the truth when the say they are sober. Denial is the child telling themselves I do not have a problems so I'll just tell mom I am sober so she does not worry

Projection is common in relationships. Often times if one of the partners is cheating they will constantly accuse the other of infidelity. This can also happen with addiction. If someone is using again they will often accuse others of odd behaviors or paranoia even though that is what they are presenting or feeling.

Rationalization is the addicts go to for excusing their behavior. If I only drink beer and not liquor I won't get as drunk and so it is not as bad. Even though they are still consuming at least a six pack of beer. A common rationalization is I was stressed out and needed to unwind. In life it can be I did not get that promotion because my boss does not like me.

Repression typically only presents itself in times of severe duress. Such as a child who has no recollection of their abuse because their brain blocked it out. This is also common with sexual assault victims. The younger they are the more likely the brain will repress severe acts of trauma from the brain.

Displacement is common in all walks of life. We have often been told not to take our anger or emotions in general out on others but it is harder than you think. When a person has a bad day at work and then comes home and yells at their child. They are displacing their anger on someone less powerful in order to feel powerful. In my life displacement happens often when my boyfriend drinks. In reality I am mad at my parents for being alcoholics, however, I get mad at him because alcohol is a trigger.
