The check is viewed as many different opportunities within the family and causes conflict mainly between Walter and Benetha because he wants to purchase the liquor store so badly to help with finances but he views Benetha’s positivity as sucking up to Mama so that she will put the money towards her schooling. Everyone was also very eager and urgent to claim the check once it arrived and it sort of stressed out Mama in a way that she was feeling rushed to decide what to do with the money.

Beneatha - Wants to be able to go to school and use the money to support her future while also wanting to please Mama.

Every family member has a different idea of what they want to do with the check. The check symbolizes their goals for the future. Walter wants to use the check to open his own liquor store in hopes to provide his family. Although Benetha could use the money for medical school, she knows that the decision is in Mamas hands and she supports that. Mama hopes to use the money to buy a house with a yard so that everyone can have their own space and Travis can have a bed instead of sleeping on the couch.

In one way, it brings relief and joy to know that there is a way out for the family and there is money coming towards them and they could get out of their situation. In another way, it brings a lot of stress and turmoil because different characters have different ways of choosing what to do with the check. Walter, sees it in a more selfish way but he knows that his selfishness could benefit the family, mama has her own dreams to keep the family together, and beneatha thinks her med school could also offer the family so many different opportunities.
