Graduate student Olive is on a mission. Her best friend Anh is in love with her kind-of-ex-but-not-really-because-she-didn't-like-him-ex and feels guilty. Olive tells Anh she's completely over Jeremy and in a last resort effort to convince Anh she doesn't care, Olive proclaims she's going on a date. Olive believes that if she just hides in the laboratory all night during her "date" and Anh will date Jeremy and the whole debate will be over. Until Olive sees Anh in the laboratory and kisses the first person she sees so Anh will believe her white lie of a date. Olive's mistake: she just kissed a professor at her school.

Lord of the Flies

Awful book! Prepubescent boys are stranded on an island with no adults and must figure out how to survive. I strongly disliked this book. I dislike it so much because it explains the idea that 'boys will be boys'. This expression has been used to dismiss hurtful things that male teenagers have done to females. It is typically discussed in scenarios of abuse or sexual harassment. While Lord of the Flies does not have a female character, in the beginning the author states that he wanted to write a book in which the boys acted realistically. This communicates the notion that boys will turn to savages when left on their own. The author never leaves us with a call to action, only our own explanation of the extreme events that just took place. It seems like the book is one big description of 'boys will be boys'. I dislike this book because no one should be excused of their wrong doings simply because of gender, age, race, sexuality, class, etc.

Kaeleigh and Raeanne are identical twins but could not be more different. Kaeleigh is a result of Dad's love for mom misplaced and Raeanne just wants her Dad to notice her. I give this book 2 stars because I love Ellen Hopkins and I think the book has great potential, I'm just not in the mood to read something that begins with a sad tone. If I'm going to read a sad book I want it to blindside me and this was just too depressing right off the bat.
