One reason I think this is because there are other sources like TV shows and movies that show a lot more realistic violence than video games. Kids know that the violence that is in the video games they are playing is simulated and isn't real because the violence is animated, but in movies and shows, the violence is actually acted out by humans, which might provide a greater influence. Games like Pac-Man and Mario have the player kill monsters, but TV shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead have a lot more violent scenes. According to the article Violence in the News, "increasingly horrifying and graphic pictures are shown daily in the news from the current conflicts." If we are so worried about kids seeing violence in their video games, then we should also hide them from the news and the TV. In the salon.com article, it says that after a Dutch study involving 194 children who played video games was conducted, the researchers concluded that "video games did not seem to pose harm for most domains of children's psychosocial development" and had no evidence that deemed violent video games harmful. I also think that violent video games help reduce stress and blow steam off. This might be why media uses violence to advertise video games because boys will be boys and gravitate towards exciting action filled games.
