It all started when the United States "became the leader of the free-market capitalist world" because they were the leaders who were responsible for stopping the spread of communism by the totalitarian Soviet Union.

In 1947, President Harry Truman established this doctrine that stated "the United States would supply any nation with economic and military aid to prevent its falling under the Soviet Union's influence." The doctrine was a changing point in Foreign Policy because it allowed for the United States to intervene in other countries freely which had not been established clearly before the Cold War.

It was established by the Secretary of State George Marshall in July 1947. A fun fact is that "the United States spent thirteen billion dollars on economic and technical support for the war-torn democratic European countries that were destroyed during WWII."

After WWII ended, the allies including the United States, France, and Britain had occupied an area in Berlin which was Soviet territory. The Soviet Union had wanted to push its occupiers out of Berlin so they could have the city all to themselves. They went to drastic efforts to push them out such as closing highways, limiting food availability and other supplies. Unfortunately, their efforts were not successful because the allies decided to get their necessary supplies through an aircraft. The whole strategy and idea of using the airfield in Berlin is how the event got its name "Berlin Airlift."

McCarthyism occurred during the Second Red Scare when Senator Joseph McCarthy often accused government personal of being communist with little evidence. McCarthy was able to convince people that there was a true communist threat in the United States because he created the paranoia of communist spies were omnipresent and that he was America’s only salvation. He was able to create an atmosphere of fear which caused people to believe McCarthy and the idea of communism in the United States. The whole idea ended up in many innocent lives being lost and consequences such as a diminished reputation because those that were accused of being communist could not live that down.

In 1957, President Eisenhower proposed the doctrine to Congress who approved of it. The doctrine granted other nations the right to request the United States for economic assistance or military forces if they are being threatened by another state. It was really put to the test when Lebanon felt the threat of the Soviet Union and requested the US's assistance. The whole purpose of the doctrine was to help the US have a flexible ability to intervene in foreign affairs mainly when the Soviet Union tried to invade other countries with their communism beliefs.

It all started when Kennedy refused to supply armed personal for the Cuban Invasion. The Soviet's took this response as a way to build missile launch sites in Cuba because they believed the US would not interfere. The whole idea of the missile launch sites was to prevent any future US invasions into Cuba since the Soviet Union and Cuba were allies. On the contrary, word got out to the US president who planned a response for the issue and blocked Cuba completely. As a result, the Soviets promised to get out of Cuba and take their missiles with them as long as the US took their missiles out of Turkey. All of the tension of missile sites led to what was known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
