In the 1600s Britain began to build its empire. Spreading the country’s rule and power all over the world through a process called imperialism. This brought big changes to cultures, industries and societies.

It had its height in 1922, it was the biggest empire the world had ever seen. At its top it covered around a quarter of Earth’s land surface with ruling over 458 million people.

The first British colonies were in North America also called New World. It was in 1607 Captain John Smith founded the first permanent English colony in Virginia.

Over the 20th century, Britain’s empire broke down in stages. At the first WW there was a feeling of nationalism, where the countries have the right to be independent and rule themselves. In 1926 Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa became independent. Which means they are no longer under British control.
Over the next decades the remaining colonies pushed for independence. After The second WW, Britain no longer had the wealth or strength to manage an empire overseas.
https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/history/general-history/british-empire-facts/

You perhaps think that tea is from England because it’s such a popular drink. But tea is actually from China and they have the most produced tea. Tea is made of blades. When you visit a home in England they’ll most definitely offer you tea instead of coffee. At some hotels in Britain there will be a tea tray when you go into the hotel room. Year 1662 a portugués princess married England’s king and she was a tea addict and got loads of tea with her to England. 1717 Thomas twining opened the first tea shop. Before that there were only coffee shops. Nowadays some British people drink “afternoon tea” and eat maybe a cookie, little sandwich or a piece of cake to the tea.

Guy Fawkes’ Night/ Bonfire Night

Guy Fawkes’ is on the November 5th. On November 5th 1605 a group of men designed a plot to kill the English king James I, by blowing up the Houses of Parliament in London. The plan was to plant barrels of gunpowder in the cellar beneath at the Great Hall at Westminster where the king would have a meet together with his Parliament the next day. One guy ( Guy Fawkes’)out of the 4 guys was guarding the gunpowder and waited to light the fuse but the guards searched the cellar and found Guy Fawkes’. The guards arrested him and then tortured him and finally the guards executed him along with the 3 other. To celebrate that the king survived they made 5th of November a commemoration day and that is the way it has been ever since. People usually gather together to watch the fireworks and roast marshmallows at a big bonfire. Although there were 4 men planning the death of the king the people only remembers Guy Fawkes’ and that is why they put a guy on top of the bonfire.
