Diagnosis requires that the death remain unexplained even after a thorough autopsy and detailed death scene investigation. SIDS usually occurs during sleep.

risk factors for SIDS are:

  • Sleep position
  • Birth-related factors
  • Prenatal/pregnancy factors
  • Race/ethnicity*: Some racial/ethnic groups are at higher risk for SIDS than others
  • Sleep area/surface
  • Temperature
  • Immunizations: Vaccinated babies are at lower risk for SIDS than unvaccinated babies.
