         <title>FALL: Animal &amp; Plant Defense Amplify Unit &amp; parts of Plants/Animals FOSS</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Earth is inhabited by a staggering variety of animals and plants, with incredible variation in size, shape, color and parts. <em>How does each of these kinds of living things continue to survive? How do their offspring survive? What does their survival have to do with the nearly endless variation we observe among living things?</em> All living things must meet their basic survival needs, including getting food, water, and oxygen, and avoiding being eaten by other animals. The body parts (structures) of animals and plants function in ways that enable living things to meet the their survival needs. Understanding how structures help organisms and their offspring meet survival needs serves as a foundation for future learning about adaptations, inheritance, genetics, natural selection, and evolution.<br><br></div><div>Students take on the role of scientists advising an aquarium director by helping answer young visitors’ questions about Spruce the Sea Turtle, who will soon be released back into the ocean. They investigate how Spruce can survive in the ocean, particularly since sharks live in the area. They then investigate a question about Spruce’s offspring: <em>How can Spruce the Sea Turtle’s offspring survive where there are sharks?</em>&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-experiment with different materials to define properties in relation to light (translucent, transparent, opaque)<br>-create shadow puppets with fingers and other materials<br>-create puppet show scene, write dialogue, put on shows!<br>-cross curricular with humanities<br>In this unit, students take on the role of light and sound engineers as they are challenged with a design problem to design, build, and then project a scene for a puppet show. As light engineers, they tackle the question <em>How do we make different parts of a surface brighter or darker?</em> by investigating cause-and-effect relationships. Students apply their new knowledge to create a background scene for a puppet theater, using patterns of light to create the effects they want. </div>]]></description>

         <title>SPRING: Pebbles, Sand, Silt FOSS Unit</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Students engage with the anchor phenomenon of earth materials that cover the planet’s surface. They observe the properties of rocks of various sizes and study the components of soil, study the results of weathering and erosion, locate natural sources of water, and determine how to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water on Earth. The driving questions are what are the properties of earth materials? and how do they interact and change?<br><br></div><div><br>Students use simple tools to observe, describe, analyze, and sort solid earth materials and learn how the properties of the materials are suited to different purposes. The investigations compliment the students’ experiences in the <strong>Solids and Liquids Module</strong> with a focus on earth materials and the influence of engineering and science on society and the natural world. Students explore how wind and water change the shape of the land and compare ways to slow the process of erosion. Students learn about the important role that earth materials have as natural resources.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>SPRING: EiE Designing Walls Unit to build off Pebbles, Sand, Silt with SB</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Wood, stone, metal, plastic . . . if you want to build something, materials matter! Different materials have different properties: they may be more useful for one purpose and less useful for another. Explore earth materials—including clay, sand, and soil—as they’re used in mortar to build a stone wall and how they can be used to solve problems. The storybook <em>Yi Min’s Great Wall</em> sets the scene; Yi Min uses her knowledge of earth materials to design a rabbit-proof wall to protect the school vegetable garden. Drawing on their knowledge of the properties of earth materials, students will learn to think like a materials engineer and plan, build, test, and improve walls of their own.</div>]]></description>
