The movement of population from farms to cities. In the 1800's nearly 5 million people lived in rural areas. During the Industrial Revolution, people left farms for better job opportunities in the cities to work in factories. An issue of urbanization was the fact that so many people moved to cities it caused over population and cities to be crowded.

In 1798, Eli Whitney wanted to speed up the process of making each part of muskets faster so she made machines able to manufacture each part separately and faster. This meant that if one part broke, she would easily be able to make another part of the musket instead of having to replace it whole. This helped the Industrial Revolution by allowing more musket parts to be made at a time and faster.

Factory owners forced children as young as 7 years old, both boys and girls to work at factories. The children were used for fitting in small spaces around large machines so they could change spindles. This helped the Industrial Revolution because it allowed the factories to grow faster and get more machines because of them forcing kids to work without having to pay them any money for the work they were doing.

Mill workers - daily life 1800's

Many workers worked long hours many days a week to earn money for them and their families. For example, Mill workers had to work 12 hours each day, 6 days per week, all year round to earn enough money for them and their families since the wages were so small. Women usually worked in the spinning room but also sometimes also worked as weavers or drawing-in hands. This helped toward the Industrial Revolution because by people putting in a lot of their time to work for small wages, the factory owners are able to make enough money by selling their items to build machines and upgrade their factories.

In the 1700's and 1800's, many people worked long and difficult hours making many goods by hand. This was a long process, so people were working toward finding an easier way to make products with faster production rates. The Cotton Gin was one of the many inventions made during that time. It was made in 1793 by a person named Eli Whitney. The Cotton Gin was used to clean Cotton of its seeds. This helped the Industrial Revolution because it allowed work to be done quicker and easier with less workers needed to be paid.

In the 1700's and 1800's, many farm owners found the amount of hours they had to put in at work difficult so some people were working to make machines that could solve this problem by making work easier and faster. One Machine that was made was the Early Textile Mill. This machine was made by Richard Arkwright. It came out in the year of 1793 and was powered by water. It was used in many farms around America. It was used for quickly and efficiently turning Cotton into thread for weaving and to quickly weave thread into fabric or textiles. This machine helped the Industrial Revolution because it allowed products to be made faster and easier without as much help from people. This also allowed less workers to be hired meaning that the farm owner was losing less money from paying people for working for them since it was now mainly machines doing the job.

In the 1700's, many workers worked very long and hard hours just to earn very small wages to keep their family from being hungry. Over the years, a few people began to design and build machines to help make the production rates faster, and make the process of making the products easier. One Machine that was made was the Spinning Jenny. The Spinning Jenny was made in 1764 by a man named James Hargreaves. The Spinning Jenny was used for spinning wool or cotton in a faster and easier way. The Spinning Jenny helped the Industrial Revolution because it was one of the many machines made that allowed products to be made faster and easier, and be sold for lower prices to more people.

Before the Erie Canal was created, people traveled on flat bottom boats propelled by oars, poles, or sails through the MoHawk River. It was a 2 week long ride that was very risky and dangerous. After the Canal was created, it took a total of 4 to six days which was a large difference and a lot less dangerous for most people. The Erie Canal was a total of 339 miles long and 120 - 200 feet wide. The Erie Canal was used to lower the cost and time it took to transport goods across the Appalachians. The Erie Canal helped toward the Industrial Revolution by reducing the cost of shipping good tremendously from $100 down to $10.

Over time, people began to design machines to help with farming and other jobs. One machine was the Iron Plow. The Iron Plow was built in 1847 by John Deer. It was used for cutting turf and turning soil. This helped the Industrial Revolution by doing this part of the farm work more efficiently and it required less workers.

During the Industrial Revolution, people began finding easier ways to do things that required less worker's assistance by designing and building machines. One machine that was built was the Cast Iron Stove. The Cast Iron Stove was built in 1834 by a man named Philo Stewart. The Cast Iron Stove was used for burning wood and coal. They could be used to cook or to heat people's houses. The Cast Iron Stove helped the Industrial revolution by allowing food and goods to be made faster and more efficiently without as much help from workers.
