-A major battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the US and the naval forces
-Japanese believed that they could fight two fights at once (thought their operations were secret)
-American code breakers broke the Japanese Navy's secret code
-Admiral sent two carriers, the Lexington and the Yorktown to meet the Japanese
-An all our airstrike was initiated and even thought the Lexington and Yorktown sank, there was no attack on New Guinea

•November 24, 1944 - 80 B-29 Superfortress bombers from American bases in the Mariana Islands bombed Tokyo
•The B-29s needed to refuel, so they decided that they should invade Iwo Jima, since it was in the middle of the Marianas and Japan
•The island was rocky and covered in volcanic ash, form the dormant volcano at the southernmost part of it.
•February 19, 1945 - about 60,000 US Marines arrived at Iwo Jima
•The Japanese artillery attacked the invading men
•Over 6,800 Marines were killed

-German submarines start to sink cargo ships along the east coast of the house 
-The submarines would see the ships at night because the ships were outlined by the city lights

-The Americans saw they were losing lots of ships 
-They started to make more ships than the Germans were sinking
-Also they made radar, sonar and depth charges
-They put these new technologies on boats and planes to see the German submarines

  • The Germans did a surprise blitzkrieg through Ardennes to Antwerp
  • The Germans had already done this strategy three times before but thanks to miscalculation there was only 2 inexperienced units there. 
  • The Americans were caught flat-footed 
  • The Germans were running low on fuel
  • Thanks to General George S. Patton's idea to move the troops to Bastogne we were able to win 
  • The war was the most costly for the Americans and they lost around 100,000 troops.
