How did the time period in which the work was written affect how and why it was written? (Think: who was in power at the time Shakespeare wrote this?) In the time period of Macbeth, King James was both ruler of Scotland and England because Queen Elizabeth passed without offspring. Shakespeare was playing it safe when writing Macbeth because it was his way of stroking the king's ego. In Macbeth, he makes the king touch people and heal them alluding to the idea that King James was a great ruler.

How does placing the piece in the context of our time period affect its meaning and how it is perceived? If Macbeth was placed in 2020, the idea of prophecy and fate would change. For example, the witches somewhat had control of Macbeth's fate but in today's society, people are more about making their own destiny and writing their own story so Macbeth would be more superficial/ less realistic.

The New Historicist approach includes first the idea that people in powerful positions and society learn to balance and respect it. Another main idea of this approach is that the history of a certain time period and it's relevance to the written piece unfolds and interprets itself and allows the reader to better comprehend the text and why it's structured the way it is.

Person 1: Why bother viewing literature through the New Historicism perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?
Depending on the time period that something was written can change the meaning of the entire story. People usually put themselves into the story and when you read it today somethings wouldn't mean as much as they did in the past. For example now witches wouldn't have such a big impact on us, because of the social norms. But during Shakespeare's time witches had a much larger social impact because that was normal, and people believed that it was a big thing and a real threat. Just like now the corona virus is seen as a real threat but we will probably look back and think that it's not as big of a deal as we think it is right now. Just like the witches were a huge deal during Shakespeare's time but they aren't right now.
