Residential Solar as A Neighborhood Amenity

My interest is in quantifying indirect financial benefits to solar adoption. We already know that adding solar to your home increases its value beyond the cost of the panels themselves. The idea here is that perhaps one home adding solar increases the value of nearby homes, making solar not just a personal amenity, but a "neighborhood amenity." This research would require some serious data work (merging multiple datasets) and spatial analysis.

This is our current project, but posting as a reminder: We have system data on all MA solar households 2014-18 (address, system capacity, lease/own, etc.). We use Dwayne Breger's financial model to calculate the net present value of installing solar based on ownership status, government incentives, and more. Then, we compare the financial returns to solar across race and income groups using census data.

We examine the objective function of decision makers in different storage ownership patterns ranging from community storage to utility owned systems.

The motivation for this work is that heating is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emission. This is because most buildings' furnaces and boilers depend on fossil fuels such as oil and gas, and replacing them with electric heat pumps can lead to significant carbon reduction. To do so, we would identify good candidates for transitioning from fossil fuels to electric heat pumps by analyzing their electric usage data. We would then combine such analysis with demographic information to ensure that the benefits that accrue from such transition are distributed equitably across the population.

This is so interesting. I'm especially interested in the last part - what solutions address both climate and justice goals? Are there options that are equal from the climate perspective, but much different from the justice perspective and what affect would that have on public approval? I wonder if that would correlate with centralized vs distributed renewable generation choices? I.e. if you could build more distributed solar in areas with high pollution, could that accelerate closing of high pollution generation?
