Another thought is that we are empowered if we become part of the conversation and not mere subjects of a conversation .. What I mean by that is that we answer questions with more questions instead of simply answering them .. when someone asks me .. where are you from? I can reply back I'm from Colorado ... and then, a question .. What do you want to know about Colorado? :-) or when someone tells me I have an accent.. My collogue who is white/Irish said in a meeting in front of the board members, "all Hispanics like drama". I smiled and said that's interesting because I was raised by my mother who was a nurse, and she didn't like drama. My mother actually looked Italian, not Puerto Rican. Some folks would assume she didn't speak English because of her last name, which is Castro. I recogize that my proximity to white-ness is real and grants me certain privileges, like not being questioned by security, less microagressions, not being stared at, etc. in comparison to my Black and Brown peers. ]]> 2021-07-28 18:10:25 UTC https://padlet.com/baraujo6/nlolrle652iyyal8/wish/1663343784 Discrimination: During my senior year in high school, a mentor figure who was a Latina staff member told me that it's good that I was going to college so I can be with white people where I belonged. There was no malice behind her words, but those words hurt, especially because she didn't think there was anything wrong with what she said. Privilege: I was the backseat of a parked cab and a cop came up to the cab. Confused, I came out of the car to ask what was wrong. The cop told me never to leave the car without instruction and said he could have shot me.
