I turn to my faith to remind myself that we can do all things in Christ that strengthens us and that we're here to be light and help those around us ... even when others doubt our abilities or treat us unfairly. Another thought is that we are empowered if we become part of the conversation and not mere subjects of a conversation .. What I mean by that is that we answer questions with more questions instead of simply answering them .. when someone asks me .. where are you from? I can reply back I'm from Colorado ... and then, a question .. What do you want to know about Colorado? :-) or when someone tells me I have an accent.. I have at times replied yes, to me all people have regional accents ...bilingual people tend to have accents too :-) So, I answer, give my opinion and educate ...

I experienced this when i started working at 18 yrs old. My collogue who is white/Irish said in a meeting in front of the board members, "all Hispanics like drama". I smiled and said that's interesting because I was raised by my mother who was a nurse, and she didn't like drama. So I said "we can't assume and profile that all hispanics like drama".

how do we change this and make better? I would love to see a world without labeling individuals by their color of the skin instead by the character. we all need to look into our DNS to find out no one is 100% one color or one race.

In my breakout session, it was interesting to learn how a person can think they know you by your skin color. My mother actually looked Italian, not Puerto Rican. Some folks would assume she didn't speak English because of her last name, which is Castro. We need to help society change that mind set and by educating others it can help with this particular so familiar trend.

I travel often for work throughout different parts of the US and have even been able to travel abroad a few times. I recogize that my proximity to white-ness is real and grants me certain privileges, like not being questioned by security, less microagressions, not being stared at, etc. in comparison to my Black and Brown peers.

Discrimination: During my senior year in high school, a mentor figure who was a Latina staff member told me that it's good that I was going to college so I can be with white people where I belonged. There was no malice behind her words, but those words hurt, especially because she didn't think there was anything wrong with what she said. Privilege: I was the backseat of a parked cab and a cop came up to the cab. Confused, I came out of the car to ask what was wrong. The cop told me never to leave the car without instruction and said he could have shot me. Looking back, if my skin were darker, that cop probably would have shot me.
