         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Social Inclusion and Non-Discrimination: </strong>Social exclusion through discrimination or stigmatization can cause long term damage to physical and mental wellbeing through prolonged periods of anxiety and stress.<br>In a recent study of newly arrived refugees 90% of participants reported having faced discrimination which contributed to feeling a reduced sense of control, lower levels of a trust, the feeling hopelessness and a decline in their mental health.(Ziersch et al., 2020) <br><br><strong>Unemployment and Job Insecurity: </strong><br>Due to cultural differences, language barriers and higher education qualifications not being recognized migrant workers often find themselves employed in roles not relevant to their skills and lacking job security.(Cain et al., 2021) <br>Migrant workers in Australia feel unsafe at work and have experienced wage theft, bullying and discrimination.(Cain et al., 2021) <br><br><strong>Housing, basic amenities &amp; the Environment:<br></strong>Barriers contributing to housing issues refugees face include difficulties navigating the private rental market, a lack of community support, limited social ties and a lack of affordable housing.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Health to me is emotional, physical and mental wellness.<br>I am trying to teach my kids that health is more than regular dental checks and vaccinations.<br>I allow my kids a mental health day each term and encourage a self care routine with my teenage boys that makes them feel confident around their peer's.<br>I feel like I am promoting and maintaining good health for myself and my children when I am focusing on every aspect of their health and leading by example.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Health issues impacting refugee&#39;s</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Country of focus: Sudan</strong><br>Sudan is a country in Northeast Africa, it is one of the poorest countries in the world, internal conflict and political unrest has resulted in the destruction of Sudan's economy.<br>A war between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary rapid support forces broke out on April 15th 2023.(Mazou, 2023) <br>Currently their is limited access to healthcare as the majority of Hospitals are out of service and millions have sought refuge in neighboring countries.<br>Three common health issues Sudanese refugees arriving in Australia present with are:<br><br><strong>High Rates of Depression, Anxiety and PTSD<br></strong>Due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan many refugees report having experienced extreme acts of violence against family members, torture, sexual abuse, poverty, lack of education and malnutrition.<br>This can result is extremely high rates of PTSD, depression and anxiety and a lack of trust that can put a barrier between them seeking help.(Loza &amp; Hasan, 2007) <br>Development programs for refugees such as the <a href="http://www.sailprogram.org.au/site/">SAIL Program | Volunteer Program for Sudanese Refugee Educational Support</a>), who provide free education and support to the Sudanese community in Australia and the&nbsp; <a href="https://www.qec.org.au/families/cald-groups-sudanese">CALD GROUPS - SUDANESE | www.qec.org.au</a> who offer a culturally and linguistically diverse playgroup aimed at newly arrived Sudanese mother's can help refugees find connections within their community, provide support and opportunities for growth that can greatly aid their mental health.<strong><br><br>Malaria<br></strong>Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite that is spread to humans via an infected mosquito bite.<br>Symptoms can include a fever, chills, muscle and joint pain, fatigue and a rapid heart rate. About 1% of global deaths and illnesses due to Malaria originate from Sudan.(Abubakr et al., 2022). Patients are diagnosed with an RDT test and should be admitted to a hospital urgently if they test positive for consultation with an ID specialist. (<em>Refugee health assessment</em>). <br><strong><br>Heliobacter Pylori<br></strong>Heliobacter pylori is a bacterial infection of the stomach.<strong><br></strong>Cramped and unsanitary conditions in refugee camps increase the prevalence of gastrointestinal disorders such as Heliobacter pylori.(<em>The Royal Children's hospital melbourne</em>) <br>It causes epigastric pain, vomiting, nausea and iron deficiency. Patients are diagnosed with a H.Pylori stool test or a urea breath test, if positive initial treatment is per the Therapeutic Gastrointestinal guidelines with a follow up test after a month and referral to a specialist for second line medication.
