On Wednesday, the Senate voted Tulsi Gabbard into the director of national intelligence regardless of the Democrat's and Republican's questioning about her experience.

The 52-48 vote decided she would be leading the nation's 18 different intelligence agencies and in charge of Donald Trump's daily intelligence brief.

Republic senators had been worried about the authority the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act grants her, which Gabbard states she plans to appeal when she served in the house as well as previous statements about Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, she continued to frustrate Republicans by refusing to call Edward Snowden, who stole 1.5 million classified documents from the National Security Agency, a traitor.

According to the National Review, Tulsi Gabbard was voted in along party lines to serve as Donald Trump's director of national intelligence. Mitch McConnell, a previous Republican leader of the Senate, joined all Senate Democrats in opposing Gabbard's confirmation Wednesday morning.

Tulsi Gabbard, previously a congresswoman from Hawaii and army veteran, will now have both access and authority to "declassify secrets, brief the president on intelligence-related matters, and oversee the federal government’s vast intelligence community (IC)."

Vice President JD Vance was able to convince skeptical Republicans by securing a yes vote from Senator Todd Young, former Marine Corps Intelligence Officer. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton had also been talking with the white house about how to persuade the undecided members of the Senate prior to the vote taking place.

USA TODAY: Tulsi Gabbard confirmed by Senate as Trump’s national intelligence director

Tulsi Gabbard will now be added to Donald Trump's inner circle as director of national intelligence despite lawmakers raising questions about her views on Russia, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden who was responsible for leaking classified information. Former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell stated that she was unfit for a job of this responsibility.

"In my assessment, Tulsi Gabbard failed to demonstrate that she is prepared to assume this tremendous national trust," McConnell said. “The nation should not have to worry that the intelligence assessments the President receives are tainted by a Director of National Intelligence with a history of alarming lapses in judgment."

Almost 100 previous officials in former intelligence and national security, all had the same concerns about Gabbard's nomination. They wrote that her "sympathy for dictators like Vladimir Putin and Assad raises questions about her judgment and fitness."

After taking the "Rate Your Bias' test on AllSides, I learned that I tend to lean more to the left, which is pretty accurate based on the issues that were brought up in this specific test.

There are some problems where I see through the perspective of the right side more, so I would personally consider myself towards the centre of the political scale. But, everyone does tend to lean more one way more than the other, and for me, it is to the left.

This activity is very beneficial for making us as individuals question our source of news and media. Some things the general public can do are use websites such as AllSides to read the same news headlines from varying news outlets and perspectives from all sides to make sure you receive all the information available to be able to create your own, unbiased opinion about the event.

It is important that when reading the news, more often than not the main goal is not to educate you on the issue but to educate you on their side or perspective of the issue. Another important asset is the ability to fact-check and separate facts from opinions to not be swayed in one particular way over the other due to false information you had believed to be true.
