It shows how girls who are forced to conform to gender stereotypes have a higher chance at depression, becoming a child bride, having to leave school early, and/or going through violence. For boys when they're forced to conform have a chance at being more physically violent, dying from unintentional injuries, more likely to be addicted to drugs and committing suicide, and having a shorter life expectancy than women because of the lack of support for mental health, drug abuse, and physical violence. This is showing how hard it is for kids and when they grow up, the lasting harm of forcing people to conform to gender stereotypes.

The song lyrics from Rocko and Beyoncé show how much of a difference there is between lyrics written by men and lyrics written by women. One literally talks about date rape while the other song talks about how women have been defined by society. It demonstrates how the first set of lyrics have basically been normalized in our society today, but Beyoncé's lyrics were considered controversial because it makes the claim that feminist is a person who believes in equality between men, women, and everyone in between.

The YouTube video, second article, and the picture all challenge the norms of society. The YouTube video is an ad by Billie selling razors that actually shows the women with hair. Its basic statement is saying that even though they're a woman, they can make the decision for themselves to shave or not. It forces people to realize that women have hair and that's okay. The societal pressure for women to be put up on this pedestal of being flawless includes being practically hairless, except on the top of the head where the hair should be long and thick. The picture also makes the viewer think about the initial bias they have making them think through their thought process. The first reaction would probably be that the man's legs are on the left with the obviously prickly hair. But you never see the gender of whose legs are whose. The second article is about a book where the author challenges how women are treated and "if they suck, or if it's just gender bias." It validates women in their feelings and shows them how they are being treated has nothing to do with their personality and everything to do with their coworkers' views of women and their place in the workforce.

For example, in the meme that's attached below on how the person can't tell if a comment made was sexist or racist, assuming that the person is a woman and of color. It shows that people are treated differently for a number of different things that is physically shown or even something that needs to be told vocally like gender identity or sexual identity. And with the picture beneath it, it shows how many labels a singular person can have and live with and carry around on a day to day basis.

In the song “Good as Hell” by Lizzo, she sings how she is black and a woman and even fat and how the world will always be fighting against her for those three physical things that are displayed on her person that she can’t exactly change in a heartbeat. Lizzo talks about how despite the world being against her and trying to push her down for it, she pushes back and makes a name for herself because she believes she deserves it and is worth it. I included this because she faces adversity day to day because of how she looks to the world and even though she was still able to make a name and face for herself, she still has to fight harder than other people too.

In the YouTube video, it explains intersectionality and how it affects people just because of what their physical appearance shows the world around them, or what they have told a person. It breaks down the term intersectionality for everyone to fully understand that an Asian woman would be oppressed differently than a white woman would be. In the article, “The Effect of Intersectionality in the Workplace,” it shows just that. How people can overlap with others, but go through things differently on a daily basis.

In the YouTube video, it explains privilege and oppression quite perfectly. It uses a coin as an example and says that the side of the coin that is facing up represents the privilege that a person can have and the side of the coin that is face down represents the people that are oppressed by that privilege. It showed how that in order for a person to have privilege, someone almost always ends up being oppressed because of it, there’s no complete balance. In the song by Macklemore, “White Privilege II,” it says how we (white people) always seem to want and use black people’s culture, but when black people started to lose their lives to police violence and brutality, most white people were quiet and did little to nothing about what was going and some even would say “Blue Lives Matter” as a way to fight against the “Black Lives Matter” movement. In the picture (not the meme) attached at the bottom shows a white man holding a sign saying “Is his life worth less than mine?” with an arrow pointing to a black man who is also holding a sign saying “Is his life worth more than mine?” It’s relevant today with the movement against police brutality towards people of color, especially black men.

The article talks about a blind white man being stopped by a police officer while he was on campus because the officer believed that the blind man wasn’t able enough to walk to where he needed to be on his own. It shows a different way of oppression that isn’t always noticed at first, but seen as a way to be help or an act of kindness by helping someone with an obvious disability do something they probably have to do every day with or without help from a stranger. The meme also included at the bottom of the page shows a white man saying that he has the privilege of not knowing he has privilege. The meme can be taken two ways. One person can say agree with it, whereas on the other hand a person can say that no one knows if the man has a disability or his sexuality or if he was even born a cismale. There are so many possibilities on how he can be oppressed, but because of how he appears of the bat, he can probably pass and have the privilege of a white man.

It displayed different ways that feminism crosses boards and is universal, almost. It had a lot of questions and an actually question that says to question your own knowledge and no matter how much a person thinks they know something, they should always question and always still try to learn, which I think is a good example for the feminist movement because there is always injustice in the world that isn’t always seen. That was also brought up in the journal by Hutchinson and Mann. It talks about how to address feminism in a “multicultural, multigendered” society and that in today’s world we can’t view things the same we did in the past. There are new things rising up that didn’t exist in the past that don’t always follow, in a sense, the “rules.” In the twitter post, it states that hating men does not make a person a feminist. That it is the exact opposite of feminism, which is not always addressed. A lot of people assume that feminism automatically equals the opposition to men when in reality it is the equality of genders. It’s a thing in the feminist practice and views that some people forget or don’t know at all. 

The picture is a group of feminist activists in Korea protesting against the sexual discrimination Korean Facebook had towards shirtless male bodies versus shirtless female bodies. I believe this ties into the website promoting Amber Rose’s Slut Walk. It says that anyone and everyone regardless of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, body shape, etc. can participate in this walk and I feel that is almost the center of feminism. Complete and true inclusion of everyone that don’t have to worry about being who they are or show too much skin. There is still a lot in the world that can be changed for the better and no matter how far across the world it is doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter, but nothing is too small to be an issue to address.

]]> 2019-04-29 05:17:13 UTC https://padlet.com/mewarcken/wgsthreshold/wish/354887826 Padlet Showcase mewarcken https://padlet.com/mewarcken/wgsthreshold/wish/354895879 Throughout the semester and while we were doing the Padlet assignment, I found some things that I believed sparked a decent conversation within myself throughout my Padlet posts. The own I believe sparked the biggest conversation was the article “When Privilege and Oppression Intersect” because I feel in my mind and the mind of others we don’t always think that a white man can have both privilege and oppression working at the same time. His privilege as a white man meant that he doesn’t have to worry about police approaching him, but his oppression being his disability meant that people didn’t think he could do simple daily things that he had to do on his own before he got assistance from someone. It showed me a different way that a person can be oppressed, not just by gender or sexuality or race.
The song lyrics by Macklemore brought forth that white people will take black culture and likes and brag about it, but once black people start losing their lives, white people don’t want to show up and support. I think this strikes a narrative and discussion within the white community on the matter of values and opinions. The meme also strikes up a conversation about the question “racist or sexist?” that women of color ask themselves when they encounter someone who says something dismissive or offensive.
The YouTube video by the razor Billie brings up the conversation about the hair on women’s bodies. It would be thought that women’s bodies don’t need to have someone comment on what they do with it, but a lot of people were. This commercial was the first one to show shaving actually hair off a woman’s body whereas there have been multiple commercials with shaving the hair off of a man’s body with no comment. Which also brings up the website for Amber Rose’s Slut Walk. The walk is for the right for women to wear whatever they want without the worry of being touched without permission or to be raped or sexually assaulted.
