A Japanese movie starring Mei Kayama, an actress actually diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. In the movie, she portrays Yuma Takada, a 23-year-old who dreams of creating Japanese romance comics but faces barriers from publishers who believe she lacks real-life experiences. Additionally, Yuma’s mother, who is her full-time caregiver, believes that Yuma cannot achieve most things without her due to her disabilities. While this also talks about the struggles of disability it also highlights the cultural difference in Asian family dynamics.

The movie looks into their lives and how they navigate school, college, and the workforce. It also explores there lives as they participate in education, employment, and intimate relationships.

The movie tells the story of Trevor, an 18-year-old diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and Ben, his caregiver. Trevor in the movie pokes fun about how individuals often see him as fragile due to his disability. However, at the same time, he also feels undeserving of enjoying life outside of his house. The movie explores his road trip adventures with his caregiver where he travels, experiences romance, and tries new things for the first time. Additionally, what I like about this movie is that Trevor is portrayed as a “regular” boy, who is interested in cruel jokes, playful banter, and exploration of both romantic and sexual intimacy.

A Korean drama that talks about the relationship between two brothers, the older being diagnosed with high functioning autism while the younger brother acts as his caregiver. In the show, though the older brother is independent, he displays a lack of behavior regulation and social awareness. Often in the show, the younger brother sacrifices his happiness to help his older brother live his life. Additionally, what I like about this show is that it has a cultural perspective of an Asian family, who expresses collectivism values as opposed to individualistic that is often seen in Western media.

Shaun, despite having immense medical knowledge, is often doubted due to his lack of social skills that could impact his relationships with co-workers and patients. Being homeschooled for a majority of his life Noah makes the decision to go to a public middle school, however, struggles to even make it through the school entrance. His parents end up getting him an emotional support dog that he takes to school. Though it is considered a comedy, the show highlights real-life situations (e.g., meeting new people, feeling judged by everyone around you) and dramatizations (e.g., sinking into the floor, amplified voices) that someone with social anxiety may have. Additionally, Noah has a friend named Amara, played by Sophie Kim, who has a real-life diagnosis of Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy.
