1. I chose this PD for a few reasons. Being new, I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew, and I've participated in Twitter directed learning environments before. I enjoyed the forum and knew that picking a Twitter Chat PD would allow me a certain comfort level in a completely "new" arena. Also, I am not the librarian that picks non fiction books intentionally. I love stories! Let me live in a land of sunshine and rainbows and make-believe and I'll be one happy lady! Since I chose a format that allowed me to participate within my comfort zone, it only seemed fitting that the genre of the content be OUT of my comfort zone.
2. At this point, very little has surprised me with my chosen PD model. I'm ready to cross off the first week of responses off my "to do" list, so it DOES surprise me that I'm ready to begin prior to being able to! (Hence the early post here!)
3. Currently, I am successfully beginning planning with my question: "What is best for THIS learner?" Am I successfully DOING what is best for each learner? I don't think so... but I feel that if I ever truly think yes, then I'm patting myself on the back for a "job well done"... and this job is NEVER done! I'm not sure I'll ever be satisfied that I'm doing exactly what each learner needs, but I think never being satisfied means I'll (hopefully) never get stagnant. I also feel that I'm successful in my use of technology as a tool. I've always thought that just using tech because it "looked cool" or "was fun" was the WORST. If students are creating and collaborating as a result of utilizing tech, great! But I've never wanted tech to be the "point" of a lesson. Another concept that excited me what that the "innovator's mindset" also follows the growth mindset idea that was embraced at my old school. The power of "yet" was incredible to teach and experience, so it thrills me that I have already adopted that thought process. I can't wait to see where the power of "yet" can take me through this PD!

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose? I am quite familiar with Apple products and wanted to expand my knowledge on the apps and programs it provides. We also have a set of iPads in the classroom and for the grade level and I am always looking for new ways to implement technology into my lessons, small groups and activities. With the knowledge I gained from reading the program guides and exploring the programs myself, I am also able to support my teammates with their iPad questions and needs and bring new programs into the classroom. 2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module? Apple’s process for creating, editing and saving is very similar across programs. I felt comfortable with each of the programs and grew confidence the more I played with and created new items. I uploaded Garage Band from the App Portal and was surprised when some of my students were familiar with the program and began to create songs and play different instruments. It proved to me that the students may be more capable within the apps than we think. It also encouraged me to upload these programs and give the students the opportunity to explore and grow their knowledge. 3. What are some things you are already successfully implementing in your classroom as a result of this PD? I am very familiar with Google Drive (creating and sharing documents) and Apple’s programs are very similar. I was able to use numbers and pages for planning small group/whole class lessons and taking notes/sharing resources during team planning. Once these documents were created, they were saved on the Apple cloud/drive on my teacher iPad which made for easier planning meetings and organization. I was also able to share and upload the plans, notes and resources as a document to our Shared folder on Google drive, the team’s choice for communicating and sharing material.

1. The main reason I picked a book study is because I love to read and I am in need of digital learning CEUs. I enjoy using Twitter so I thought this PD was a win-win for me. 2. What has pleasantly surprised me with this PD is that my chosen book (Kids Deserve It!) reasonates with many of the things I did in the classroom and also do as an administrator. It validates best practices and reminds me to continue to take the time to do these things. I have also learned a few ideas to try. I think this is a great book for teachers and administrators. I like how the chapters are short so you can read in quick spurts when you don’t have a lot of time in one sitting. 7. This PD promotes digital learning as you must be involved in the slow twitter chats with your colleagues, and the authors are strong proponents of twitter with twitter chat questions at the end of each chapter. Many of the ideas they share involve technology. They show through their writing how twitter has helped each of these principals grow in their profession. Technology brought them together!

1.Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
A. Most of my electronics are Apple products, and I am familiar on the basic uses this type of technology offers. Even though I am familiar with Apple products, my expertise stems from the iPhone and the Mac book. I am not as familiar with the I Pad and the many uses it has to offer. I use the iPad for assessment purposes and I implement this type of technology during literacy and math rotations. The reason I chose this PD, was to explore what programs the iPad has to offer and the new ways I can implement iPads into my lessons, expanding their use in small groups/reading and math rotations, and share my knowledge with my teammates.

2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
A. Before exploring this PD option, I only thought of an iPad as a way to organize yourself or a way to check the weather. But, this PD shows you ways to use the simple apps such as Pages, Garage Band or Key Note and adapting these apps and their settings to become appropriate for your school environment. When exploring Key Note in college, I only saw this app to create presentations, but never knew the ins or outs of the program. For example, the Magic Move surprised me. Magic Move transition creates the effect of objects moving from their positions on one slide to new positions on the next slide when you play your presentation. By gaining this knowledge about this program, I can bring more life to presentations, make them more engaging and interactive for students during instruction.
3. What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD?
A. The opportunity I see for myself and my classroom, is the use of Garage Band. Knowing I can record audio, I can use this as an opportunity to bring a listening center into my classroom. By recording my voice for my students, they are able to listen to stories that are not just the ones they listen to on Raz Kids or Epic. Also, we do not have a lot of opportunities to listen to all of our students read throughout the day. By using Garage Band, I can teach my students to record their voices while reading, giving students the opportunity to practice their fluency.

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose? I chose to complete the Apple Teacher module because I have not used iPads in my classroom for several years. Since we have a cart of iPads for our 4th graders, I wanted to maximize the impact that the iPads could have for my students. I also have a personal Mac computer, and only use the very basic tools that I am comfortable using. In learning more through the Apple module, I am hoping to use the iPad tools for hands on exploration and learning for my students.
2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module? I cannot believe how many tools are available on iPads. When I think about iPads, I typically think about games and apps. I didn't realize that the kids basically have a complex computer at their fingertips. Everything that they can do on a PC can be done on an iPad - and more! I love that many of the tools that I have explored so far can help me enhance my teaching in Math and Science.
3. How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future? Now when I am planning, I can think about using technology in a different way. For example, not only could I potentially use Keynote for presentations/lessons, but my kids could also create Keynote presentations for their classmates. I didn't even know that the Creativity app existed. I can see my kids creating diagrams for science, and showing their work on difficult math problems. The products that the kids create can be shared with their families to make learning even more meaningful for my students. I am excited to keep learning new things, and I cannot wait to share these tools with my students!

1. I chose the Apple Teacher module for my PD because I don't always feel very confident when it comes to technology. I know Apple offers a variety of tools that could be helpful in the classroom and I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and explore some of them.
2. What has surprised me so far with this PD choice is how user friendly the tools were. Most of them follow similar steps so it made it easy to catch on. I was surprised by the examples of ways to use these tools in the classroom. I never thought about incorporating movie making into classroom presentations, but now it seems like it would be a fun way to spice up some book talks/reviews in the future. 3. I can see this PD impacting my students because now that I feel more comfortable with the Apple tools I will use them more in the classroom. I think Pages for iPad will be the most beneficial because it seems similar to creating slides in PowerPoint. I can't wait to play with it a little and see how I can enhance my teaching.

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose to enter grad school and obtain my masters in literacy in order to further develop my knowledge of literacy instruction, strategies, and best practices. I hope that by obtaining my masters I will better understand how to help all students in all areas of literacy.

2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
So far the data has surprised me the most. One of my classes is a global research class and in this class we study global research that surround trends in education. I have had MANY moments during my hours of reading that have made me stop and go "huh"...there are many countries/cities (Singapore!) that are doing education very well and reading some of the things that they do has been very eye opening. I have also read research regarding school violence that has surprised me, with the US falling below the global average in school violence. So many things have been surprising and eye opening while reading through the many global research findings.

3. What has had real meaning?
The research in my global research class surrounding homework and two strategies (consensus boards and social issues) in my literacy development class have both had real meaning. I was able to take he reading and research surrounding homework, reflect, and apply it to my classroom this year. I have also taken two strategies from my literacy strategies class and have used them in my classroom this year in reading and in social studies. My students know when I get ideas from my "classes" and love that I am bringing things that I learn at "school" back to them at their school! :)

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose the Apple Teacher PD module to refresh my memory on how to use Mac and iPad products. It has been several years since I have used iPads with my students and I am very confident and comfortable with google drive and Chromebooks currently. I hope to learn how to use the iPad and all the apps to best benefit my students and enrich their learning through creative tools and apps. In addition, I want to learn new ways to integrate all the iPad has to offer into my teaching and lessons.
2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
I am surprised at how simple the steps are to create interactive presentations in apps like Keynote. There are also helpful videos that explain how to create new presentations that can be helpful not only to teachers but to students as well the first time they are using a new app. Something else that I realized is that many students are already familiar with apple products since many may have their own iPad at home. Therefore, learning how to use new apps at school can also be utilized at home if needed in class.

3. How will this impact future students and instruction?

There are many engaging and exciting apps for students to use to share what they have learned while putting their own creative spin on their presentation. This will get kids excited about presenting what they have learned and engaged in class! I can see many great ways to use this in science and may try out some new apps on for our upcoming science unit on ecosystems where students will complete an independent project.

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose to complete the Apple Teacher module because I really felt like I needed to be refreshed. Over the past several years, we have been using Google Chromebooks in the classroom. The transition back to iPads for me hasn't been a hard one, rather than just a different one. Although I believe I have a pretty good feel for Apple, I know there's still lots I can learn.
2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
For the record, I'm not all the way through my module yet, however, there has been one thing that's really surprised me thus far. I had no idea the "Pages" tab even existed. I thought it was really neat that they had the different templates for all the different types of writing you can do. Where was this when I was in school?!
3. How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future?
I think that by becoming more knowledgeable with Apple and technology as a whole, could have a pretty big impact on my students in the future. The more I can learn about the iPad, the more I can teach them. Technology isn't going anywhere, so the more information I can give them at a young age, the more beneficial it will be to them in the long run.

1. Why did you choose this PD module? I chose this module because even though I have worked with IPads for the past 7 years at the MS and ES, I am still very much a novice at the use of them. I have recently began working with EC students and I am now understanding that I much become more proficient with my use. Many students needs different avenues of learning and expressing what they know and technology gives them these vehicles.
2. What surprised you the most? My frustration level was extremely high. I think I have always been in training with small groups of people to guide me and relied on their help. Being home and not having that additional support with this was overwhelming. It really showed me how little I know about the applications that were available to me. In the end, I will be better equipped :)There are some very beneficial tools to incorporate into my lessons.
3.I am very excited to use the note taking application with some of my students. I think it will be so beneficial for them to make charts and graphs and insert instead of just words. Also inserting pictures into their notes will be a great help for them to study. Also, they they can use some of these new apps to organize their materials while adding some neat ways to express their understanding in a non traditional manner.

1. Why did you choose this PD?
I chose to become an Apple Certified Teacher. I chose this PD because of the access to iPads we have at LNC. I have used iPads in my first grade classroom for over 6 years so I feel fairly comfortable with Apple Products. I thought by becoming more versed in the functions of the iPad, I could help broaden my students use of technology past just learning games. I wanted to learn how to use the applications offered by Apple to allow my students to create and further their learning.
2. How will this inform your instruction and impact students in the future?
This program has refreshed my skills with the iPad. It also taught me many new things I did not realize could be so useful in my classroom. Learning more about the apps provided on the iPad will create many new learning opportunities for my class this year and for classes to come. Using apps like garage band and iMovie, I can allow students to create movies and songs that reflect their learning of concepts taught. I also plan on using garage band and iMovie to communicate with parents. I plan to record several strategies to solve math story problems to allow parents to help their children complete math homework. I also want to use these apps to have students retell stories, which is a huge concept in literacy.
3. What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom?
I already listed some of the ideas I see myself using in my classroom above. I really think this training has refreshed my ability to use technology effectivly in my classroom. I look forward to implementing these ideas in my classroom, sharing with my students, families, and colleagues.

No one likes to see themselves on video and I don't like the idea of having other people watch me as well. Implementing a flipped classroom takes some bravery (on my part) and now is the time to take that leap and see how it benefits my kiddos.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I chose Apple Teacher because I am working on becoming more confident in using technology in the classroom. I came from a school where technology was not easily accessed and have been gradually adjusting to the resources LNC gives us ever since. I am looking forward to implementing more technology in my classroom as I learn to prepare them for the increase in technology at LNC MS and HS.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

I am surprised that I have had all of these apps on my iPhone since the day I bought it and never knew how to use them until now! What great, free resources that have been at my fingertips all along that I took forgranted. I am excited to learn how to use them and implement them in the classroom.

How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future?

While teaching first grade, I’ve noticed that kids are pretty comfortable with each other. It isn’t until they get older that they tend to develop a fear of public speaking or presenting. Using the apps with Apple Teacher, I can help my students create presentations behind the computer screen and feel more confident to share their knowledge with the class. I also like how these apps encourage collaboration. It is often hard for 6 and 7 year olds to divide and conquer projects, but as they get older, they will be able to work together through technology to complete a task.

This will be very helpful when students are completing their Daily 5 "Listen to Reading" activity.

Reflection #1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose? I chose the book study because I do not enjoy reading so it pushes me out of my comfort zone and learning style and challenges me to do something I would not typically do. I also like that I have a “guide in Rogowski” cause I need that person to check in with. Finally, I like the slow pace and that we get technology credit.
#2. What has surprised you so far with the chosen PD module? I am surprised that the book is an easy read. It relates well to the LNC philosophy and how we encourage teachers to take risks. I enjoy reading short twitter posts from my peers and responding to them. It encourages my use of this social media platform.
#3. What would you add to the PD?
Since I am a counselor, I need to read this and reflect with a different lens than the teaching staff. I can work with concepts like “growth mindset” and innovation. My challenge is to take these concepts from academic skills to life skills and using them to create better soft skills / character within them.

Quarter 1 Reflection
Q1 Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose this module (edweb.net) because I wanted to be able to choose PD that was in the reading content area but would also fit into my STEM classes so that I could use it for licensure. This module does this and I can do it on my own time at home or at school. It also stores my PD videos and gives me certificates as proof if I pass a quiz at the end. I liked that I can do these videos on Saturdays as well as the workdays.
Q2 What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
I think what surprised me the most was that the very first video gave me an immediate idea for a lesson plan that I could use next week in my classroom. I didn’t think that I would get such an immediate positive experience with this edweb collection of webinars. I was hoping to get some good ideas or tools to use, but not on the first day. Now my second video was definitelynot as exciting, but to get a good lesson out of the first PD day is exciting to me!
Q3 How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future?
As I said above I got a great idea for a lesson plan out of one of the videos. I am going to do what is called a “booksnap” with my third and fourth grade kids. I will review Pic Collage with third grade and teach it to 4th grade. They will pick a part of the book that sticks out to them and have to add emojis and annotate why this affects them. It creates a digital image of the book.

It is easy to register and assign students to online programs, but there is so much more to technology than placing students on educational apps. I am not that familiar with all that apple has to offer, so I am looking to learn how I can implement technology into my lessons beyond apps.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

I was surprised with how easily I was able to pick up on how to use some of the features on the iPad. I would love to do the same thing only research on the iPads and create a report in pages.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD?

What has surprised me the most so far is the data I have been reading in the books for one of my classes. The class is about issues in global and urban education. A lot of the data compares issues across different countries. I always knew that the United States was behind many countries in regards to education, but it really surprised me that these countries are doing great things that the US has yet to adopt or try out. I found myself wondering why and how education systems would be different here if the US took some ideas from others.

3. What has had real meaning?

One thing that has really had meaning so far was actually something in a chapter I had to read last week. This chapter was all about homework vs. no homework. It ready made me think about the homework I assign to my students. I want to make sure the homework I am assigning to my students has meaning and they understand the importance of it.

Now is the perfect time for me to go back as my child is young and I have the time available after-school to devote to grad-school work. I have been out of college now for almost ten years and would like to learn more about current best practices and how to incorporate more connective learning opportunities in my classroom. This will help me better prepare my students to become global citizens.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

One class I am taking is called Current Issues in Global and Urban Elementary Schools. We read the book titled, "Teaching in a Flat" . The book discussed the most successful education systems in countries like Finland, Singapore, and Canada. It was really eye-opening to read how much teachers are valued in these countries. In Finland, about 5,000 teacher candidates are selected from over 20,000 applications each year. There is an obvious connection between the value placed on teachers in these countries such as Finland, and the number of yearly applicants. I was surprised to read how these countries develop effective teachers and school leaders, and the opportunities to continue further education. I wonder why the United States hasn't implemented similar programs.

What has had real meaning?

We read a chapter in one of our books on the idea behind homework. Reflection 2 What are some things you are already successfully implementing in your classroom as a result of this PD?
In my ELED grad class we have been studying Urban Education, specifically looking at cultural differences in regard to education. I have already used discussion about cultural differences in my classroom to help students understand that as much as we all may look different and think differently, we all have a heart that can be hurt or happy. It is up to each individual to decide what they would like to do to other people's hearts.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I am currently working toward my mater's in STEM. I currently have a degree in English, but my passion is math and science, so I felt like expanding my horizons into STEM would be a great idea. I believe that this degree will expand my knowledge and expertise and I am looking forward to working hard to get there.

What surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

Funny.

What has had real meaning?
So far, I have gained a lot of knowledge about what education looks like elsewhere and how Globalization effects our education system. It has been interesting to discuss the experiences of other educators and look at the real differences from where they are teaching and where I am teaching.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I am currently taking classes at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in order to obtain a Master’s Degree. My concentration is in Literacy. I thought this would be a great concentration for me since I teach First Grade and it is a very important year with teaching children how to be good readers. I am hoping to learn about the researched and best practices for incorporating Literacy into every subject.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

I am currently taking a Reading class and a Globalization class. I have learned many new things and a few things that I surprised me. I was surprised to learn that the United States is well known for many things but education and the recognition of teachers is not one of them. Compared to other countries, we are behind. I hope that this can change. I was also surprised by the averages of violence in schools and the different criteria countries report for that violence. Some report violence as severe things and not hitting someone where as others report anything that revolves around violence, which causes the data to be skewed.

What has had real meaning?

I have really enjoyed my Reading class. Our professor helped write a book called, “What’s New in Literacy Teaching?’ It is a great read with lots of good ideas that I could start incorporating right now, What has had real meaning for me so far was a chapter about conversation and collaboration. This is so important for kids as well as teachers. The chapter discussed different ways of retelling stories other than the conventional ways. One strategy that I plan to try with my class is called serial retelling. This allows the students to read for 10 minutes and then they have a chance right after to share with a classmate something from the book that interested them. This gets the students excited about their reading and excited to talk to their classmates about what they read.

-Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose to complete the book study because I enjoy reading. In the past, I have found books written by other teachers to be inspiring for my own classroom. I enjoy hearing other perspectives from more experienced teachers.

-How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future?

I believe this PD will change my end goal when planning lessons for my classes. I want my students to effectively master as much content as possible, but I also want them to love learning about music. I am constantly looking for creative ways to encourage and praise my students for their hard work and accomplishments.

-How can you go "big" in your classroom, using some ideas you’ve gotten from this PD?

Whenever I see creative ideas that I would like to try with my students, I usually discover that it takes extra planning time on my end. Anytime I want to try something new and creative in my class, I end up researching the best way to teach a lesson and searching for hands on materials. I know that it goes beyond the bare minimum required to teach the lesson, but I know that with a little extra effort on my end, my students will walk away with happy meaningful memories from my class that day. These are the go "big" moments that I believe help students remember the instruction for a long time.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
As a new teacher I am always looking for new ways to challenge myself and my students. Since our math textbook is online without printed materials for students, I wanted to expand my knowledge about technology tools and resources. This book seemed like the perfect fit.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
There are a tremendous amount of free high quality math and science resources available when you start to look for them. I love that they allow me to differentiate and meet my students individual needs like a textbook can't do. For example: I discovered Freckle and I am introducing it today. This PD has inspired me to seek resources that will empower my students to learn in ways that drive them.
What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD? Technology allows for a more interactive classroom environment, where the teacher acts as a guide. I think this PD will be extremely useful for me as a new teacher as it is providing me with tools that allow me to streamline my planning, enabling me to focus on creating rich content opportunities for my students as opposed to generic worksheets.

1.) What's a new way you can be creative in class and enhance your students excitement?
I am reminded by this month's reading that technology is a great way to enhance my room, but I can't become dependent on it or lazy about turning to technology to create the fun for me. Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose Apple Certified Teacher because we are fortunate to have access to iPads for our students' use. I want to ensure I'm using the iPads to their full capability to enhance my students' learning.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
I wasn't aware of the potential the pre-loaded apps possess. I've been an Apple user for several years, but I've never really utilized apps like iMovie, GarageBand, Keynote, etc. I had never considered using them for my students to create projects, so I was surprised at the possibility of using these apps to enhance my students' learning.

List benefits & challenges of doing PD this way (LNC Choice). What changes would you make?
I'm excited for the opportunity to have choice when selecting PD. Approaching PD in this way will allow teachers to reach professional goals in a personalized way. In the past, I've struggled with being made to participate in PD that was irrelevant to my grade/subject area. Now, I can choose PD that's meaningful to me and will genuinely benefit my students. As of now, I don't see any changes I would make.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose to do the Apple Certified teacher because I feel there is a gap in my knowledge with Apple. I am very good with google and all of the things it has to offer. However, with Apple and especially the Ipads I just know basics. Since technology is a high motivator I want to learn more so I can be a more effective teacher for my students.

What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD?
I am hoping to gain more knowledge of how my students and I can use the ipdas to help increase their learning throughout the year. Technology can be a resource to help students with independent task on skills they need to practice more to move to the next level. This year for kids club, another staff member and myself are doing photography club. I am hoping to pick up some tips to help our club members explore photography using the ipads.

How does this PD promote Digital Learning Competencies?
Being an apple certified teacher will help in all the ways to promote Digital Learning Competencies. However, my personal outcome goal is to help in this specific area: Digital Content and Instruction Teachers with these two areas in mind;
1.Lead all students in becoming active participants in setting educational goals, managing learning, and assessing their progress through digital tools.
2.Identify, evaluate, and utilize appropriate digital tools and resources to challenge students to create, think critically, solve problems, establish reliability, communicate their ideas, collaborate effectively.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I am currently seeking a masters degree in Elementary Education, with a STEM concentration, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

It really got me thinking about the current homework I assign my students, and had me contemplating my own philosophy on homework. I questioned whether the assignments I assign are necessary for student growth and development, and if homework is beneficial for students in younger grades.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose the Apple Certified Teacher PD because I feel like technology is probably my weakest area. My family uses Apple Products and I know that there are many tools available on the IPads and even my phone that I could use both in and out of my classroom, if only I took the time to learn how to use them. This is an excellent opportunity to do just that!

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
I had no idea the pages for IPad tool even existed! I didn’t know that I could create documents, really engaging and attractive documents, on my IPad. I’ve always gone to my old standard Microsoft Word on the desktop when I need to create something. Now I know that I don’t always have to do that!

What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD?
I will most definitely be using the Pages tool to create documents and slide shows for my literacy and social studies instruction. I will also use the Garage Band app so that my students can practice their oral reading fluency and record themselves reading.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I chose the Apple Certified Teacher PD so that I could become more proficient with the technology and capabilities of my iPad. Up until this point, my use and knowledge of this device, and how I can fully incorporate it into my curriculum has been limited. I’m eager to learn more about the functions and how to integrate them into my lessons and curriculum.

What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD?

I am actually looking forward to learning more about QR codes and how I could apply them into my class. I can envision creating pre-recorded lessons on art styles and artists, or techniques and processes, that students could access on their own through QR codes. This will enable them to be independent while allowing me to circulate and give one-on-one attention to other students simultaneously.

How does this PD promote Digital Learning Competencies?

This PD will help me promote Digital Content and Instruction competencies. It will encourage technology-enriched learning experiences where students can independently pursue their individual interests, preferences and differences. I also believe that by giving students access to these tools, they will become active participants in setting goals for themselves and will directly be managing their learning. I’m looking forward to learning more about setting up and implementing QR codes in my class. I see it as a great option for students who are eager to dive deeper into topics and processes that interest them as individuals.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I chose the Apple Certified Teacher PD so that I could learn new ways to use my Apple products and to become more fluent with the different tools that are available to help me in my classroom. Our family uses Apple products at home, however we tend to stick with the systems and processes that we already know. Each year, Apple invests much time and energy with updating their software and adding new tools & systems that can help me be more efficient as a teacher. I am looking forward to learning new strategies that will help me both at home and in the classroom.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

The modules I have taken so far have been very informative! I learned that Quicktime player is not only for playing pre-recorded video and audio files but it can also be used as a versatile recording tool. Another feature I didn’t realize was available on my computer is the Mission Control button. For years I have been using my dock to help me navigate between open websites and programs. I never realized that there was a button on my keyboard that would allow me to see everything open on my computer all at one time. This little button alone is sure to be a game-changer!

What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD?

I am looking forward to learning more about what my Mac has to offer. I see some great opportunities in becoming more efficient with creating documents, newsletters and presentations for my classroom. I also think that these new skills will help me better collaborate with my colleagues on lesson plans and team documents.

Why did you choose the PD module you choose?
I opted to participate in the Ditch the Textbook book study because I want to challenge myself to find new and innovative teaching opportunities that go beyond "textbook instruction." It also seems like a logical option because we don't have text book options available this year for either of the courses I'm teaching (ELA & SS).

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
I've been pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to relate to the information Matt Miller presents in the book. I enjoy the way her writes and find many of his suggestions to be very applicable to my classroom experiences and opportunities. Unlike some other PD courses I've taken in the past, I can see where this book will be both relevant and practical.

What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom through this PD?
Matt Miller is opening my eyes to a new world of technology opportunities in my classroom. Because I'm enjoying the book, I've started to research him online and read his blogs. I'm exploring ways to include hyperdocs, infographics, podcasts, and so much more into my teaching. I like the way he challenges us to make learning addictive for our students. I'm going to set a realistic goal of adding one new technology tool to my classroom each month. This allows me to challenge myself without feeling overwhelmed by all the new opportunities I'm discovering.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose the Apple Certified Teacher PD because I do not have a lot of experience with technology in my classroom. I would like to learn more about how I might use the iPad to support learning and instruction beyond learning apps/games. I consider myself an apple person and feel fairly comfortable with the operating system but I have not had much experience with Pages, Numbers, or Keynote. I usually default to Microsoft or Google to create documents or slides.

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
So far, I am surprised by how much the Apple programs can do and how the iBooks walk you through the process. In the past, I have tried to work in Pages or Keynote and have been frustrated because I didn’t know how to maneuver through the program to get the results I wanted. The iBooks are set up in a way to walk you through building a brochure or creating a presentation. Having the experience of creating something while being taught the program has helped me.

How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future?
This PD has already taught me things about using the iPad that I didn’t know and I’m only halfway through the program. I have not only learned about the programs, but also about the iPad itself. With this knowledge, I would like to use the iPad to enhance my instruction and student learning.

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I chose to enter a Masters of Education program this fall. I will be getting my masters with a concentration in STEM. I knew I always wanted to get my masters degree at some point during my career. I am hoping by concentrating in STEM I will learn ways to incorporate elements into my classroom.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I chose the Apple Teacher PD because I wanted to get more ideas on how I can incorporate technology into my classroom.

I always assumed creating documents on a computer were easier, but highlighting, dragging, and editing on the iPad was simple once I got the hang of it. I was also surprised with how much the iPad has to offer.

What's a new way you can be creative in class and enhance your student’s excitement?

While creating the report in pages, I was thinking about how much my students would love creating reports on topics they are interested. In the past, I have done a reporting period long project about what the students wanted to be when they grew up. They researched, made a book, and presented to the class. I would love to do the same thing only research on the iPads and create a report in pages.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?
I chose to obtain my master’s degree in S.T.E.M. because I’m passionate about learning how to integrate S.T.E.M. concepts through all areas of the kindergarten curriculum.
What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?
One of the classes I’m taking this semester is about issues surrounding global and urban education. We have recently been learning about how the U.S. compares to other countries with regard to school violence. In a study conducted in 1995, the U.S. was ranked in the middle. The countries of Korea and Canada had higher rates of violence than the U.S. With all of the violent episodes that have happened over the last 20 years, I would think that the U.S. would have placed higher in the rankings across nations.
What has had real meaning?
One of the most meaningful things I have read was in a book titled Teaching in the Flat World by Linda Darling-Hammond and Robert Rothman. Chapter 2 discussed teacher pay and how that relates to teacher effectiveness. Specifically, how less-qualified teachers tend to be found in schools serving low income and minority students. Teaching was found to be the 2nd largest occupation in the nation; however, U.S. teachers earn only 60% of what the average college graduate earns. I believe that if a U.S. teacher’s salary was increased, higher qualified teachers would definitely lead to higher student achievement in the areas where they are needed most.

Why did you choose the PD module you chose?

I chose the Apple Certified Teacher PD in order to learn how to use the iPad more effectively in my classroom during instruction and provide more opportunities for my students to utilize iPads for more than just "Apps".

What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module?

I was surprised with the multiple ways you can use "Notes" in the classroom. Students can organize information into tables, add definitions, insert photos or media, and draw images. I was also surprised when learning how you can change settings in the Speech section under Accessibility. I love the way you can change settings for text to be highlighted and spoken to students, while adjusting the speaking rate.

What opportunities do you see for yourself/your classroom in this PD?

I will be introducing a small group of my students (who struggle with fluency) to the Speech feature and will allow them to utilize this feature to help them build their reading fluency while tracking the highlighted text that is spoken aloud. This will be very helpful when students are completing their Daily 5 "Listen to Reading" activity.

-1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose? I chose the Apple Certified Teacher Professional Development because I'm not all that experienced with Apple products. We don't have apple products at my house (just ask my teammates who always say "I'm messing up our group chats." :-)). I thought that going through a guided tour of the programs available who encourage me to more actively use the iPads in my classroom.
-2. What has surprised you so far with your chosen PD module? What has surprised me the most about this PD module so far is the specificity of the quizzes. While I am not completely through the module at this time, I really needed to take time to process the wealth of information before answering the questions to earn my badges. I am surprised by how well I adapted to using a digital resource because I'm very much a paper and pencil kind of girl!
-3. How will this PD inform your instruction and impact your students in the future? By beginning the Apple Certified Teacher process, I can now begin thinking about different technology applications when I'm lesson planning. I like the idea of having students use programs like Pages to document their research. The first graders make All About books toward the end of the year and it would be a good goal to create digital products this year!

1. Why did you choose the PD module you chose? I chose to complete a True North Logic self paced module called, "Flipped Classrooms: Action Research from the GTN Project". I chose this for multiple reasons. One reason is that I need Digital Learning CEUs for my renewal and also because I could pace it myself. I also learned about flipped classrooms this summer (yes, I am behind the times with technology) and wanted more information about what this looks like in an elementary school classroom.
2. What's a new way you can be creative in class and enhance your students excitement? I think that the idea of a flipped classroom would be exciting for my students and their parents. Having the ability to watch me teach skills, from home, would be helpful for parents to see different strategies that I am using in the classroom. For students to gain their knowledge at home, it would free up class time for me to plan more exciting projects to do, small group activities and choice activities to practice the skills they had learned at home.
3. What is an idea you have had that you have wanted to try but haven't? Actually implementing a flipped classroom makes me a little nervous. No one likes to see themselves on video and I don't like the idea of having other people watch me as well. Implementing a flipped classroom takes some bravery (on my part) and now is the time to take that leap and see how it benefits my kiddos.

Quarter 1 Reflection
