Foodswitch App

The FoodSwitch App is a simple but powerful digital tool developed in Australia by the George Institute for Global Health in 2012, designed to help consumers make better food choices. Users receive easy-to-understand nutritional information by scanning the barcode on packaged food. The app uses a traffic light system to indicate nutrient levels (salt, sugar, saturated fats), and it suggests healthier alternatives. It’s based on a large food database and aims to influence both consumer behavior and food industry practices to improve public health.

FoodSwitch is technically simple—students just need a smartphone or tablet with a camera. The app is free on iOS ,Android, and there is a Windows PC download available to navigate mobile device usage at school. No login or sign-up is required, allowing for instant feedback and real-world application.

National Healthy Eating Guidelines

The Australian Healthy Eating Guidelines provide evidence-based advice to help individuals make informed food choices that promote health and wellbeing. Designed to support all Australians, these guidelines outline the recommended daily intake of the five food groups, encourage variety and balance, and advise limiting foods high in saturated fat, added salt, added sugars, and alcohol. In the classroom, these guidelines serve as a foundation for teaching students about nutrition, food selection, and lifelong healthy eating habits. They empower young people to make positive dietary decisions and develop a deeper understanding of how food affects their bodies and overall health.
