The Challenge: Blended Learning

Switching into a Blended Learning model has been quite a challenge for me to adjust. Even though I have had experience of taking online courses, the hybrid learning between online and working with others face to face came as an obstacle. Yes, I have complained and rejected this change, but eventually, I faced this challenge like an adult. Through self-motivation, I came to terms with the fact that ignoring this opportunity to learn and expand my horizons in my education would not benefit me. So, I tackled this challenge; I dove into the unknown. Learning through this mode has offered me the ability to improve my social skills, overall responsibility, and success rate. I know that in the future the blended learning model will benefit me throughout college and in the workforce. Honestly, I am grateful for Blended Learning. I have become a better student in school and towards my colleagues.

Although at first the blended learning style was a daunting task, I slowly adjusted to the different classroom style. Time management was challenging in the sense that everyone around you was at a different point in said assignment. Previously I relied on someone else to create my deadlines for me, and provide a structure. Through learning how to schedule, I also learned very basic and valuable techniques for the future. That being said, I am grateful for the independence that we have in the classroom, but things are often unclear, and lost in translation. The communication barrier proved itself to be the biggest obstacle for me to overcome

I think that blended learning works well in some subjects such as English, however it has been a great struggle for me personally in other classes and I don't think I understand the material as well. As far as English though I think it has overall been a good experience. I think its given more individuality to learning. If someone prefers to read in a group and someone else prefers to work alone they are normally able to do so. The only downside to blended learning in English is how dependent it is on the internet. It takes time to adjust and work out the kinks but after all that is over with its a good way to learn.

At first I was unsure of what would happen with Blended Learning. I was scared that I would get left behind although I am a good student. I realized though that I am not alone. With the blended classrooms I am able to work at my own pace, and I can go ahead of the group if I need to. I don't feel overwhelmed because I know that I will be able to access my work from home, or even on my cell phone. This concept works well in an English or History classroom. I don't enjoy it in Trig however. But now that I have gotten used to how things work I like it and it has made school more enjoyable because of the pace that things are set at.

Blended Learning Hasn't Helped Me Learn.

The idea of it sounds like an interesting concept but the application has been rocky. There have been classes that seem like it's been really helpful and fun even, however I have not experienced that in English class. Standard English is definitely preferred by me, and I hope that next year I will be in a regular class opposed to a blended classroom. I find the lack of structure puzzling, and the lack of standard assignments unhelpful. Typical assignments are creatively fueled, using web based apps in an artistic style to get messages across; these types of assignments I feel don't teach me anything, I honestly feel that I have not grown intellectually from the beginning of the year. Just this past few weeks we've had an assignment of a research paper, and I find I am at a loss of words, and information...quite unusual for me. The research paper is rigidly structured, abnormal to the majority of the assignments we have had all year. It makes me worry for the upcoming regents, since there are no sections of the test that involve making a drawing to convey the meaning. If I were to choose between blended learning and a standard classroom I would always pick the standard classroom, that's just how I learn best. If this was instituted in primary school and brought up along with me as I grew and developed mentally I am sure I would be more in favor of blended learning, but after about eleven years of school one way, my mind is too used to learning that specific way, and I can't see for myself, the benefits of a blended classroom.

I really enjoy this new type of learning in the classroom. It is individualized, to fit the learning needs of each student. Compared to the old style of teaching, this new way provides the students with learning that fits them as an individual, what they need help on and the skills they need to improve. I also like that we are able to move at our own pace, create some of our own due dates ect... It gives us more freedom and teaches us how to manage and schedule our time correctly, which better prepares us for the future.
Personally as a learner it has helped me improve my individual skills. At first I was unsure of this new style of learning because I don't like change. In the first couple weeks we were all paralyzed, unsure of how to tackle the wave of assignments thrown at us with no due dates. As time progressed, we got use to it and our learning fit more of our individual needs.

Not pulling any punches, I initially hated the system with a passion. It felt as if all sense of structure and order was immediately removed from my life. It felt rather easy at first to place the blame on the instructor, however I have since matured beyond this and am somewhat embarrassed that I ever felt this way at all. Before, school was almost more about efficiency rather than actually learning. It wasn't about learning and retaining knowledge, it was about doing what you were supposed to do, when you were supposed to do it, getting your grade and moving on. I still personally prefer the traditional system, however I have grown to tolerate and embrace blended learning. Ironically, it felt as though you had more control when you were confined to a specific method, due date, and medium for your project. Though I would much rather complete the worksheet and get my A, I see and understand the benefits of this new system, and how it will help me in the long run.

Blended learning has been a big change for me but it's a good change and I like that way it's set up with half of the assignments online and half with your group. I like how you are in charge of what you get done, it makes you responsible for your own learning/work

In my opinion its not my favorite because i feel as if some of the time we are teaching ourselves for example math we do things on our own and i rather be taught the material before i go on my own so i know 100% im doing it right. for English its not so bad but everything on the computer make it hard. what about the students that do not have a computer at home or internet and no study halls in school? How are we suppose to complete our work? In some cases i like it because of the group work we do.
