Psycology/ Character Analysis (Of Ponyboy Curtis)

*Motivation: He doesn't have parents and his brothers/gang are his family

-Event: 1. His parents died in a car accident, making his brothers and gang the only thing he has. 2. He lives in a shady neighborhood with the spatial divide of Socs and Greasers.

-Evidence: "I don't mean I do things like that. Darry would kill me if I got into trouble with the police. Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can, and we're careful not to get caught when we can't" (6).

-Analysis: Having no parents causes him to be more reckless and in more fights, and no one prevents him from doing a few things (ie: smoking, fighting). He thinks Darry is rough with him, and doesn't love him. Darry doesn't give encouragement, that makes Ponyboy feel more alone and gives himself self-doubt. And the spatial divide between Socs and Greasers causes alot of rough nature and high emotion in Ponyboy.

*Desires: He wants to live happily with his brothers, and have Darry become less aggravated and love him without any anger directed at him
-Event: 1. When he dreamed, he wished that he could be on Darry's good side. 2. When he was in the hospital and saw Darry, he paused and reacted in a family loving way. (cry/hug)

-Evidence: "... and not worry about being jumped or carrying a blade or ending up married to some scatterbrained broad with no sense. The country would be like that, I thought dreamily. I would have a yeller cur dog, like I used to, and Sodapop could get Mickey Mouse back and ride in all the rodeos he wanted to, and Darry would lose that cold, hard look and be like he used to be, eight months ago, before Mom and Dad were killed..." (44-45)

-Analysis: Ponyboy really does like Darry, his brother, but seems to not be able to show it. This makes interactions with his brother kind of tense, often making him or his brother make mistakes that prove fatal. And also interactions with Darry prove meaningful for Ponyboy and affects a lot of his actions.

*Flaws: He can't keep control of his emotions, sometimes he makes fatal mistakes for not being able to control them. He also purposely keeps his thoughts on a topic the same regardless to the truth. He has these flaws from living with not the best conditions and his rough gang that he hangs around with.
-Events: 1. He ran away out of just being scared, he didn't think about his actions 2. Screaming at Johnny to relive his own anger and humiliation (when he was bad talking his brother
                                                                                                        3. Reacting to people bad talking Johnny after he died

-Evidence: ""Johnny is not dead." My voice was shaking. "Johnny is not dead." "Hey, Randy" Darry stuck his head in the door. "I think you'd better go now."" (143)

-Analysis: These flaws of not being able to control emotion basically causes the plot, he creates a lot of mistakes that affect his actions and other's actions, and determines how the story goes.

*Relation of personality test: It says: Introverted mind, intuitive energy, nature of feeling, prospering tactics, and turbulent identity
-Events: 1. He loses control of his actions like when he ran away 2. He was laying low like taking school seriously and doing normal things in the beginning

-Evidence: “Then for the first time, really, I realized what we were in for. Johnny had killed someone. Quiet, soft-spoken little Johnny, who wouldn't hurt a living thing on purpose, had taken a human life. We were really running away, with the police after us for murder and a loaded gun by our side. I wished we'd asked Dally for a pack of cigarettes....” (56-57)

-Analysis: His nature is based on emotion and eventually gets thoughtful, which is helpful and hurtful in certain situations. It causes a lot of interactions with people, good and bad.

Metaphor (Of Ponyboy Curtis)

Ponyboy is loyal dog, always making the rest of the pack first priority. Controlled highly of emotion and protective against danger to the rest of the pack. Thoughtful and partially carefree, roaming the streets, always with a possible chance of being jumped scared. When put into uncomfortable situations, he lets all his emotions flood in. Always fighting against the other dog type. And proud even with all his drawbacks and all misfortune that has happened to him.

"Or I could have gotten one of the gang to come along, one of the four boys Darry and Soda and I have grown up with and consider family. We're almost as close as brothers" (7)

Explanation: Ponyboy is pretty much a loyal dog in the whole story. That quote above shows how close (or how loyal) he is to his gang (or pack). Protective against danger to the rest of the pack is like when people insulted or made Johnny insecure, he would rage a little bit. Roaming the streets with the possible chance of being jumped scared is the beginning of the story, walking down the street and getting jumped by Socs. When put into uncomfortable situations, he lets all his emotions flood in is like him running away with Johnny from getting slapped, murdering a Soc, etc.. He fights against Socs as is in 'Always fighting against the other dog type'. And proud till the end is true, their conditions are horrible, but they still have their head held high.

Johnny : Victim
He is always getting beat up and he feels insecure
Event: Constantly abused by his parents

"He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes, and that beating he got from the Socs didn't help matters. He was the gang's pet, everyone's kid brother. His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him, except when she was hacked off at something, and then you could hear her yelling at him clear down at our house." (14)

-Showing that his background nature is very rough, and he also eventually dies, with little recognition from the public, making him suited for the victim

Darry : The Foil
Darry, Ponyboy's oldest brother, affects many of Ponyboy's thoughts and actions
Event: The slap

"Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard it knocked me against the door...I turned and ran out the door and down the street."(46)

-The slap in this story causes Ponyboy to lose to his emotions and partially cause him to run away

Dally : Sidekick
Darry doesn't seem like the sidekick but he did help Ponyboy and Johnny run away
Event: Giving supplies to Ponyboy and Johnny for their runaway

"I started buttoning up the shirt. It about swallowed me. "Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville," Dally instructed. "There's an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. There's a pump in back so don't worry about water. Buy a week's supply of food as soon as you get there--- this morning, before the story gets out, and then don't so much as stick your noses out the door. I'll be up there as soon as I think it's clear. Man, I thought New York was the only place I could get mixed up in a murder rap.""(56)

-This action that Darry did potentially saved them from being caught and allowed them to continue the plot

Pony : Reluctant Hero
It seems that Pony doesn't want to be on the rough side, he didn't want his parents to die, or make Darry stressful. He hated running away and making everyone worried.
Event: Saying it's not fair that Greasers are poor

""It ain't fair!" I cried passionately. "It ain't fair that we have all the rough breaks!""(40)

-Saying it's not fair usually means that he is not content with his life

Two-Bit : Trickster
He steals, fights, and other things just for fun
Event: Coolade steal

"He was too late, though; Two-Bit walked out with two packages of Kools under his jacket." (20)

-He caused a lot more trouble than this, and it even says it in the book he does it for fun

Cherry : Confidant
Event: Talking about Soda's horse, and other personal stuff

"I don't know why I could talk to her; maybe for the same reason she could talk to me. The first thing I knew I was telling her about Mickey Mouse, Soda's horse. I had never told anyone about Soda's horse. It was personal." (36)

Cherry seems to accept his story and respects it, either way, he tells about usually private family/gang business things

Integral Setting:
-Very important in the story, most conflicts and actions are based on the setting

Examples
1. The main setting is a place of very high spatial diviion, it causes all conflicts of Socs and Greasers
2. "Safe haven" church lets Pony and Johnny not get caught (thus continuing the story) and partially causes fire thus resulting in deaths/resolution

Evidence: ""I'll get them, don't worry!" I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. "I'll get them. You kids stay out!" I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was: We started it. We started it. We started it! I wasn't about to go through that flaming door, so I slammed a big rock through a window and pulled myself in. It was a wonder I didn't cut myself to death, now that I think about it."(81)

-How It's Used: Used the lot the guide the characters to the settings
-Why it's Used: It helped the writer lead the plot/story in a logical way
Conflict:
-Vital to story line
Main Conflicts: 1. Socs and Greasers 2. Internal conflict: lifestyle evaluation, etc.

Evidence:
1. "We get jumped by the Socs. I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids. It's like the term "greaser," which is used to class all us boys on the East Side."(6)
2. "You greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated--- cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us."(35)
3. "My face got hot as I bit my lip. Darry... what was Darry like? "He's..." I started to say he was a good ol' guy but I couldn't. I burst out bitterly: "He's not like Sodapop at all and he sure ain't like me." (39)

How It's Used: The main conflict between Socs a Greasers is clearly stated in the beginning of the story during the exposition(beginning few pages), and shown with many physical conflicts with labeled sides from Ponyboy's perspective. Emotional, or internal, conflict is shown through moments of conflict with their own gang and life style.
Why It's Used: It gives a better understanding of the character's emotions, the conflicts shape the characters into the rough personality they have and also causes the actions and problems.
