The use of lights and shadows, especially in the style of chiaroscuro, was prominent in the Baroque period, techniques that Rembrandt and Carravagio implemented perfectly in their pieces. In the painting the Jewish Bride, it can be seen that light is coming from a single source-- judging by the highlights on the subjects’ faces, the light must have been coming from a high window on the left away from the scene but enshrining both subjects and making them visible in light nonetheless. This play with lights and shadows can also be seen in how texture is created on the clothes, where creases and ruffles in the clothes create shadows, using the principle of impasto or thick layers of paint to create that texture like effect on the textile present in the picture. The artist wished to take away any attention that might be directed to the background, as the background itself contrasts greatly with bright yellows and the reds of the subjects in front therefore enhancing the portrait’s depth of field. In essence, the arrangement of light and the colors that were used to highlight the subject in this painting was through the use of chiaroscuro and impasto, creating texture, shadows, and therefore depth in the painting.

He was denoted as a "Dramatist", focusing on a specific moment in time and how the subjects of that happening may have felt and what was going on with their lives when such a happening occured. Thus, in his use of light, he was able to bring the focus to the two emotional subjects, the bride and the groom. It is also light that gives color to the painting, as there is color when there is light. However, it can also be observed that both subjects are not looking outward, instead looking down, averting their gazes away from each other despite their hands being on the other. In this solitary room where the sole focus is on these two figures, observers are able to witness a certain intimacy. It can also be observed that these figures are standing close to each other, their contrasting colors however just give them enough differences so that we can make them out as two separate fingers. This distinction becomes vague, however, when the shoulder of the left shoulder of the groom and the right shoulder of the bride can be observed. Through the use of shadows, we are unable to make out where their forms begin or end, almost giving us the sense that despite them being two different individuals, they are one in this moment, in intimacy and in feeling. Inferring from the name of the piece, The Jewish Bride, these two subjects are married, or perhaps are about to be wed.
