I am discussing where I am from, San Francisco, CA. I was born and raised there. I live with my Mom, Dad, 16 year old sister, and 13 year old brother. We all enjoy an active lifestyle and we play a variety of sports. My sister plays volleyball, brother plays basketball and football and I used to play baseball and football. We all have the majority of the same values and beliefs. That's why we work so well together. During the difficult times of covid I went to ocean beach to organize my thoughts, relieve stress and take in the fresh air. I want my map to look organized and to look like a normal map. With everything on the map to be different colors, states and cities bolded, and highways in bright colors.

Rhetorical Awareness

The artifact is the unit 1 synthesis essay where I compare a book “The Devil's Highway”, website “Humane Borders Fronteras Compasivas' , and movie “border south”. That compares their rhetorical situations and the purpose of the various artifacts in the synthesis essay. I did research about the author and how I could positively impact the audience with credible information. One of many rhetorical appeals that I stated in the essay is “In Border South the author uses crickets to symbolize one of the main points he was trying to make”. Symbolism is one example of an appeal. Rhetorical appeals and this project will positively influence my future because I will learn the purpose of various sources related to each other.

Critical Thinking and Composing

This artifact is U2A1 which is a fieldwork journal. It is giving evidence about two Tucson local sites that connect the environment to the borderlands. The sites I picked are Santa Cruz River Park and Old Main. I definitely participated in borderlands communities because they have a big impact on migration and the history of Tucson. It requires critical thinking and action because I need to produce unique and authentic evidence. I composed evidence such as pictures to support my Thesis. In the Santa Cruz River Park profile description I state “Reconciliation Santa Cruz relates to the borderlands a lot because it helps remove trash and waste products from the lake”. Since Santa Cruz river park is so close to the border it is important that it is clean. This will impact my writing in the future because I now know how to get first hand evidence. Evidence from environmental artifacts and how to analyze it.

The purpose of the artifact is to separate the 3 sources that I mentioned earlier; book, movie, and article. But this time it splits up the 3 sources and the rhetorical appeal, purposes, and the audience. I needed to make sure the grammar and punctuation was correct so that It is good for the final draft. In the “Excerpts From The Devil's Highway” I thought “The purpose is to show how brutal the conditions are to cross the Mexico- Arizona border especially with 26 men in a big group”. 26 men tried to cross the devil's highway but only half of them survived. This will improve my writing in the future because I will incorporate more ethos, pathos, and logos into my writing. I will put more emotion into my writing.

For week 8 we didn’t meet in class so we needed to visit a specific Tucson location and write a reflection on it. I reflected on my visit at mission garden which is part of reconciliation Santa Cruz. It also helps the future of Tucson because the reconciliation group removes all the trash and waste products in the lake. I was reflecting on my experience of going to the mission garden and the lake. I enjoy being in nature and taking in fresh air. I stated in my reflection that“The wood that was built to form the mission is one of a kind. The scenery was incredible because I got a true feel for the Arizona climate”. Mission garden has amazing features such as plants, water, and cool architecture.

The purpose of this artifact is to show how important it is to have a peer reviewer. Sometimes we cannot catch our own mistakes while revising by ourselves. That's why we need peer reviewers. I try hard to give good feedback to my peers and I feel like I never get anything in return. Other than my family and tutors I don’t trust anyone to peer review my papers. A piece of feedback that I gave my peer was “You had some amazing primary evidence, with you in the pictures and talking to the rangers. You also have secondary evidence because you used some sources”. Overall she had great evidence. This will impact my future writing because it teaches me how to find the strengths and weaknesses in writing pieces. It is important to tell a person what parts they are succeeding at as well as critique the work when revising the writing piece.

Borderlands Course Goal

We can use our privilege to serve the less fortunate by raising money for missing persons and migrants who died from the borderlands. They came to Arizona for better lives but sadly they did not all live. For this artifact I chose D3 where I examined Humane Borders Fronteras Compasivas. It is a non-profit that gives back to the community. I stated in my discussion post that “Humane Borders encourages donations in a variety of ways such as helping out and money. They have many different resources such as to help refugees and mental health”. This shows how the non profit cares for the people and wants everyone to have better lives which is encouraged by faith. With all that being said, this has impacted my future writing because it has made me realize how to write about world problems and how to make a change. I have learned to be persuasive and figure out what the rhetorical situation is.

Homelessness is one of San Francisco' s worst problems. I grew up in SF all my life so I have seen how brutal and desperate their living conditions are. They sleep on loud city streets are in need of some money. But what do they use their money for? The tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco contains the most homeless people. I picked D1 as my artifact because it is about land acknowledgements and owning land. I want to improve the lives of some homeless people so they can own land. Homelessness is so bad in San Francisco because it cost so much and is an amazing place.
