Dr Francis Pryor argues that there was not a crisis or collapse after the Romans left in 410AD. He also argues that there is insufficient evidence of a struggle between native Celts and invading Anglo-Saxons. Genetic research shows a continuation of the ancient majority that existed before the Romans.

Changes in culture, fashion and language were not because of invasion, but that new ideas were accepted by the British...

Between 789 and 792 the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle refers to ‘sea-borne pagans’ attacking the south coast of England. It was the unprotected monasteries in the north that provided the best pickings. The Vikings began to slaughter and plunder on a regular basis.

In 793 they attacked Lindisfarne;
in 794, Jarrow;
and in 795, Iona.

Vikings had been heavily involved in trading for forty to fifty years and had travelled far up the rivers and estuaries of Europe. The raids on the British Isles by Norwegians and Danes was part of a wider picture of Viking trading, raiding and invading that took place throughout Europe.

Early raids were a minor irritation when compared to the huge Viking raid on Kent in 835. It was this raid that started a series of massive attacks on Saxon England, ending in a full-scale invasion thirty years later. From about the 850s onwards, casual plundering changed into determined invasion and a policy of conquest and settlement.

Historians believe that this was because pressure of population growth in Norway and Denmark meant that the land could no longer sustain the number of people who wanted to live on it. Norway was very hilly and Denmark’s soil was incredibly sandy.

Vikings started to conquer Britain because in Viking families only the eldest son inherited the family land so other brothers had to find land elsewhere. It was easy to recruit men into the army...
