The overall meaning of the text helps identify what reality is from what it appears to be, the need for self-expression. You begin to see the effects of the postpartum depression that takes place in the narrator's life. She is not acknowledging how convinced she is about everything. She doesn't find it different that she cannot see her baby or her friends. She is stuck in the room with the yellow wallpaper and has a hatred for it. She has hatred towards the yellow wallpaper, she states, "No wonder the children hate it! I should hate it myself if I had to live in this room long. There comes John, and I must put this away, --he hates to have me write a word." As usual, everyone has an escape from reality. Her way of escaping is by writing in her diary, this is where she feels as if she can escape from reality. As time begins to progress she does not acknowledge how her mental health state is declining.

The setting tends to play a big role throughout the story. The narrator is in an insane asylum and she believes it is her house. The relationship between a text's setting and other literary elements help the audience acknowledge the social situation of the story and to perceive the imagery. The lady is not aware she isn't where she thinks she is. This helps evaluate on how the setting affect's the readers of the text because they learn to comprehend where she is. The asylum use to be a Child Care in which there were nursery rooms. As she is in her room, she notices the yellow wallpaper. The text's various settings contribute to the meaning and overall effect of the yellow wallpaper. The yellow wallpaper tends to not be what she likes. She thinks that the color is ugly and hates it. She states, "No wonder the children hated it! I should hate it myself fi I had live in this room long." The narrator is referencing her to be seen as a child. She uses this quote in order to let the girl evaluate her feelings and how they are child like.

Explain how a narrator’s reliability affects a narrative. To what extent can a narrator or speaker of a first-person point of view narrative be trusted? How does a narrator’s or speaker’s inclusion or exclusion of particular details affect their reliability?

The narrator's reliability affects a narrative because of the bias perspective that is being shown. As the story continues the readers begin to question things such as the information that is being written. The readers begin to interpret what is being said and acknowledge the girl is not a right state of mind. The story tends to be about a woman who seems to be struggling with her mental health. It is known she needs to seek help and guidance due to what she is going through. The particular details such as the way she speaks it does not appear to be so normal. As the story continues the woman begins to hallucinate and begins to see this woman in the yellow wallpaper, the only thing is that, the girl she is seeing is her. A narrator's first perspective can be trusted if it does not involve any bias nor conflict against the audience.

A symbol that had been used in the story had been the yellow wallpaper. Yellow seems to be seen as the color of happiness, it is a bight color that brings out nothing but joy. This can help contribute to the story's complexity due to the girl's mental illness. The yellow wallpaper had been served as a symbol of her mental illness. From the beginning it had been known that the yellow wallpaper had needed some adjustments in order to fix it. There had always been poor treatment and as time went along it would only get worse. The narrator had been getting illusions, such as seeing someone crawl out of the yellow wallpaper. It is state, "As soon as it was moonlight and that poor thing began to crawl and shale the patternsgotu up and ran to help her." All along it had been her who was crawling out. The author's intention appeared to be to bring awareness to the situation. Mental illness had been what the girl had been experiencing through the story.

The main function of imagery is to help provide sensory details such as allowing the reader to comprehend what the character is feeling. The words help contribute to the sensory details in an image to provide what the character is experiencing. Throughout the story the yellow wallpaper is described to be torn and in patches and how the girl hates it. It is stated, "The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow - turning sunlight. It is a dull yet lurid orange in some places, a sickly sulphur tint in others. No wonder the children hated it. I should hate it myself if I had to live in this room long."
