Teens find social media helpful but excessive use can harm mental health, causing distractions, trouble sleeping, bullying, and unrealistic expectations. Comparing themselves to others and seeking feedback can lead to depression, while mindless scrolling can reduce happiness. Sharing personal information on social media can lead to harassment and blackmail. Social media has both benefits and harms, but its goal seems to be making teens have mental illness and disrupted self-image. Teenagers' sleep schedules are often disrupted due to the fear of missing out on trends, causing anxiety and envy.

JMIR Mental Health seeks to systemically examine problematic social media in youth. Studies have found no
evidence of heterogeneity based on gender, age, and year of publication. A study in 2016 found that 97.5% of young adults in the United States have reported using at least one social media site daily. According to a comprehensive survey conducted on 750 individuals aged between 13 and 17, researchers found that 45% of them are actively present on social media. One of the prime advantages of social media for teenagers is that it provides them with a secure and safe space to express themselves and discover various resources and interests. Unfortunately, the disadvantages occupy the advantages as well. Teens who use social media are more prone to disrupt sleep schedules, cyberbullying, and procrastination.

Alexey Makarin, an assistant professor at MIT, believes that people who use more social media are more at risk of becoming depressed.

Disinformation has long been a nuisance in social media. Conspiracy theories such as COVID-19 being an artificial virus and AIDS being a CIA bioweapon are examples of dubious veracity popularized on the internet. Protests against wearing masks have increased recently, with groups opposing lockdown restrictions and spreading health conspiracy theories. They argue that masks can lead to a lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide poisoning, despite evidence to the contrary. Misinformation is a problem that affects everyone. It is challenging to distinguish trustworthy sources from unreliable ones, and conspiracy theories tend to spread quickly. The internet can trick our brains into accepting false claims as confirmed through the illusory truth effect, making scary stories spread further than more thoughtful analysis.

The internet has given us a powerful tool to obtain knowledge, and social media plays a key role in this resource. It significantly impacts our culture, economy, and worldview. Social media enables the exchange of ideas, connections with others, mobilization for causes, seeking and offering advice. It eliminates communication barriers and allows decentralized channels for everyone to have a voice and participate democratically, even in oppressive countries. Social media serves as an outlet for various types of writing, from spontaneous to scholarly, and encourages interest-based groups to collaborate on projects outside of their classes. The platform fosters creativity and collaboration on numerous topics, including education, the economy, politics, race, health, and relationships.

A recent survey explored various ways to identify and prevent the spread of false information on social media platforms. The study suggests using computer programs, measurements, and information sets to determine the integrity of news articles. It delves into the various ways in which fake news can be identified and differentiated from legitimate news sources. This topic is of particular interest to me as it aligns with one of my key resources, Embo Reports, which also touches upon the importance of being able to discern between real and fake news on social media. Both of these resources provide valuable insights and examples of how individuals can safeguard themselves against the dangers of misinformation on social media.

Children and teenagers increasingly use social media platforms like Facebook and MySpace to connect with friends and classmates. However, they are at risk of cyberbullying, privacy issues, and Internet addiction. Parents may need help to relate to their children's digital world and need more technical skills to keep up with the ever-changing Internet landscape. It's important to understand that kids' online lives are an extension of their offline lives and to participate in the online world together.

Research has found a correlation between academic stress, problematic smartphone usage, and depression. Depression triggers negative emotional states, such as hopelessness, sadness, and persistent loss, often resulting from unhealthy coping mechanisms for stress. Diathesis-stress models of depression suggest that abnormalities in the HPA axis can contribute to depressive symptoms, mainly when traumatic or chronic stress triggers progressive HPA abnormalities. People who suffer from depression may find solace in the virtual and invisible realm of the internet, leading to increased internet use. Evidence indicates that depressive symptoms may affect the association between academic stress and problematic smartphone usage.
