Avril Lavigne is known for her pop punk rock songs during the 2000’s. The way she expresses her lyrics and vocals in her genre is what made her stand out to me. I have always admired by how she manages to have an emotional impact in a high-intensity genre and even to this day she’s still making the same tunes like she never aged. The tone of her voice combined with her lyrics combined with catchy melodies and hard rock instruments is what I always looked forward to and not something you find in every pop rock artist.

Blink-182

In an interview, Avril mentioned that she listened to Blink-182 in high school (Shutler, 2021). Avril also features Travis Barker (Blink-182’s drummer) to play for her album back in 2007, in an interview she said that she has admired Travis her entire career (LaPierre, 2021). Recording their first studio album, Blink-182 made it clear they are a punk rock band, their fast riffs and heavy drums is what made them famous (Cron, 2015).

Green Day

One of Avril Lavigne’s music influence growing up is Green Day. She said in an interview while recording her album, that she listened to Green Day growing up (Shutler, 2021). During one of Avril’s first tours, she performed one of the band’s song “Basket Case”(Sullivan, 2003). Green Day is an American band, that was formed in the year 1987 (Mignogna, 2024). With the original members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and John Kiffmeyer. (Metzer, 2008). During Green Day’s early days, they are known for their punk rock genre that has fast tempo and three-chord style songs (Cron, 2015).

Shania Twain

When Avril was around fourteen years old, she performed with Shania Twain in a country fair (The Kelly Clarkson Show, 2022). Avril posted on her instagram how was inspired by her, by relating to her in many ways and helped her through her musical journey (Lavigne, 2022). Avril also performed one of Shania’s songs “No One Needs To Know” as a tribute to her during the ACM Honors in Nashville (Black, 2022). Twain is well known for her country music and is the top-selling female artist in country-music history (Shania Twain – Canadian Music Hall of Fame, n.d.).

Taylor Swift stated in an interview how her hit song “Blank Space” was heavily influenced by the band’s bassist Pete Wentz. She also said that Pete is one of her favorite lyricist (Payne, 2019). This shows how Taylor Swift is very close friends with the band.

Taylor Swift is very influenced by one of her role models who is Paul McCartney, she has admired McCartney for having an amazing career and creating unparalleled art (Fitzgerald, n.d.). Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney has an amazing friendship that she even moved her album released just so it wouldn’t conflict to McCartney’s own album release (Vulpo, 2024).Not only McCartney has inspired Swift, but Swift also has inspired McCartney, in his solo album “Egypt Station” was inspired by Swift and relationship with her fans (Waddell, 2024).

One Taylor Swift’s favorite album of Joni Mitchell is “Blue”, she said that Mitchell’s album explores somebody’s soul so deeply including “her deepest pains and most haunting demons.” Which she might’ve taken inspiration from her own album called “Red” and how the “Red” album resembled a heartbroken person (Thorp, 2024).
