Where formal programs affirming diversity of gender expression and sexual orientation are not yet in place, contributors provide insights and practical tips for creating a positive, safe school environment. Topics include how stigma based on gender expression or sexual orientation can affect children and adolescents in school performance and risk-taking behavior, and how schools can flip the narrative on bullying and victimization to one that promotes strengths and school connectedness. Teacher and school staff training issues are also addressed, along with suggestions for advocacy on the small scale and at local, regional, and state systems levels. In this book, school counselors and psychologists, administrators, teachers, and other community stakeholders will find steps they can take to translate and implement the ever-growing body of scientific theory and research on equitable education of gender minority and sexual minority children, youth, and families.

Secondary Books/Articles:
Human Rights Campaign Foundation Marks Ten Years of Tracking Violence Against Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People, Recording 32 Fatalities in 2022.

Difficult Conversations in Support of LGBTQ+ Students.

-Star-Crossed by Barbra Dee: This is a sweet romantic comedy for the middle-school age group. Mattie, a girl, is chosen to play Romeo in her eighth-grade production of Romeo and Juliet. Her Juliet is a girl named Gemma, on whom Mattie has a crush. Mattie also has a crush on a boy... Is it possible to have a crush on both boys AND girls? On top of Mattie’s love life, the play is in trouble with backstage drama to rival any Shakespeare play!

-A Family is a Family is a Family by Sara O’Leary: This picture book tells the story of a classroom full of students who are discussing what makes their families special. One student is nervous to share anything about her family because she thinks they’re too different. She soon learns that there are many different and special families that belong to her classmates.

-When Aidan Became a Brother by Kyle Lukoff: This story is about a boy named Aidan who is preparing for the arrival of a new baby sibling. When Aidan was born, people thought he was a girl, so they dressed him in clothes that “girls might wear” and made his room pink. Aidan is worried that the same thing will happen to his new baby sibling but his parents make sure he knows how much they love him and have learned from his experiences.

-I am Jazz by Jazz Jennings: This story is based on the life of Jazz Jennings, a transgender (MtF) girl who in her own words describes the experience as having a “girl’s brain and a boy’s body.” The focus of this book revolves around understanding gender identity, as Jazz’s parents, over time, come to accept her for who she truly is.

The stories feature contemporary fiction with a touch of fantasy.

-Act Cool by Tolby McSmith: Aspiring actor August Greene just landed a coveted spot at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York. There’s only one problem: His conservative parents won’t accept that he’s transgender. And to stay with his aunt in the city, August must promise them he won’t transition. August is convinced he can play the part his parents want while acting cool and confident in the company of his talented new friends. But who is August when the lights go down? And where will he turn when the roles start hitting a little too close to home?

-Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Melinda Lo: This story is a historical fiction about a queer Chinese-American girl living in San Fransisco, California during the Red Scare.

-Rick by Alex Gino: This book details a student named Rick who is beginning 6th grade. As we follow this story we see Rick begin to understand asexuality and how he feels about himself.

-Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Gervin: This book tells the story of Riley Cavanaugh who enjoys blogging about their experience with being gender-fluid in a heteronormative world that doesn’t accept these concepts. One main theme in this novel is understanding one's own identity and the struggles that come along with it. We learn here that it’s okay to feel masculine and feminine at different times/ on different days. This book also addresses bullying as there is an anonymous person who claims they know what Riley’s real identity is and they start making threats to Riley.
