I wish I had of had an opportunity to learn the local language where I grew up. As it was not encouraged in the classroom I never heard my friends speak them often, other to each other, so it meant that I couldn’t join in. So, my friends became mostly English speakers. Chinese students in my experience as a child tended to have their own friendship circles and everyone else, mostly international students had there friendship circle. Not being inclusive of languages in the classroom caused a split and divide in our classrooms even though ‘speak English’ was meant to make sure everyone was being included. This did not eventuate in the social contexts such as the playground.
