I think making these agreements brings to the surface the norms of the classroom, thus making minority languages or dialects or home languages have a purpose and place within the classroom. I think it provides transparency about who the students are in the room to everyone, the other students, the teachers, the families and the community. It makes a statement for the school as well, saying we are inclusive and value who you are. If the agreements ensure there is room to share knowledge with others, then it also sends a message that the school is open to learning new things and ready to listen. It also shows we care about who we are teaching. I believe the parents would be surprised but eventually may feel more inclined to share as the students explain how using all their language resources helps them to learn.

I wish I had of had an opportunity to learn the local language where I grew up. As it was not encouraged in the classroom I never heard my friends speak them often, other to each other, so it meant that I couldn’t join in. So, my friends became mostly English speakers. Chinese students in my experience as a child tended to have their own friendship circles and everyone else, mostly international students had there friendship circle. Not being inclusive of languages in the classroom caused a split and divide in our classrooms even though ‘speak English’ was meant to make sure everyone was being included. This did not eventuate in the social contexts such as the playground.

Visible learning agreements in the classroom allow students to authentically participate in how they express themselves as well as promoting the learner profiles.

I think having it as a living document accessible to the children to share their ideas will encourage action and excitement about using their mother tongue.
Not only having the parents on board but by collaborating with the language teacher with joint learning engagements will support translanguaging on a transdisciplinary level. Eg explain this math problem to your grandma in Arabic. Film it and put it on Seesaw blog.
Another year long activity could be teach your teacher-- they give me words to learn and spell for the week.
