I was given one by Kos, Phebe, As You Like It Act 3 Scene 5, Think not I love him..... After rehearsing it a few times, I began to feel as though this monologue wasn't really suited for me. A few weeks later, I still felt the same way, we were rehearsing with Colin, when I was given another choice of monologues. There was one in particular that Colin thought I’d be great at, (Viola, Twelfth Night) so I read through it and put it into practice. I went on stage and performed it in front of the class and instantly thought it was a good fit for me. I rehearsed quite a lot at home and in college during breaks, I was pretty keen on performing this particular piece because I felt as though it was better suited for me. She’s appeared in the likes of Top Boy and BBC series, PRU and Jotham Annan, an ex RADA student and professional actor who has appeared in Holby City, 2006 As You Like It and 1066: A Year To Conquer England.

We sat down with them and had a formal Q&A, where we learnt about their individual journey’s, on how they became actors and the sacrifices and commitments they have/had to make in order to get to where they are. Beforehand, we watched clips of each of their acting careers, Nkechi’s showed her acting experience in Top Boy and PRU and Jotham with .

I asked Nkechi, coming from someone who attended to a PRU like yourself, how was your journey as a student who has been permanently excluded, wanting to be in the industry?  She explained that she struggled a lot in school especially with maintaining her anger. Like me, she was permanently excluded from secondary school and was placed into a PRU. She later moved onto college where she attended Westminster Kingsway in 2019 studying Performing Arts for a year or so before she was excluded from there too. 

She added that she didn’t attend drama school but didn’t allow that to stop
herself from moving forward, and that you don’t need to just to make something of yourself. There are many different ways you can become an actor/actress such as signing up for acting classes, workshops, volunteering at youth clubs/theatres. Learning that opened my eyes, it showed me that you don’t need to be
 
After applying and auditioning for many roles, She was later called back by the creators of Top Boy, sent in a self tape and was later casted in Top Boy S2. After filming Top Boy, she learnt that she had a lot of time on her hands, Nkechi was still working in retail but was still acting on the side. She began attending online acting classes and auditioning for roles with which she then later found PRU where she was cast as Sienna, The message I received, was that no matter where you come from and how you look, you can be anything you want to be when you put your mind to it and to continue putting myself out there. rehearse our monologues to be performed in front of Jotham Annan as Nkechi Simms had to leave. I was very anxious as many would be and spent the time rehearsing with my peers. After hours of rehearsing, it was later my turn to perform, in the room sat Shenagh and Jotham with Josh as the camera man. 

I began to perform but didn’t like my start so I started again. As I started continued to perform, I kept forgetting the words, I was so frustrated as I spent hours rehearsing over and over. I got through with it and was given feedback. He said how he believes that I have a very clear voice, great articulation and that it is perfect for performing. Shenagh mentioned how I sing and he added how I could be a “triple threat” in the industry

Studying Theatre at university will help me to improve on my knowledge and skills within acting to aid me in my future. What I love the most about this subject is the power and adrenaline I gain whilst I'm on stage. I have always had a passion for acting ever since I was young and I'm really looking forward to developing different styles and pursuing my dream. I have shown myself to be suitable for this course through my achievements at college, for example we have performed a chair duet, which we had learned from Frantic Assembly projects and have transferred that skill into a piece based on feminism as well a workshop with Lung Theatre, who spoke to us about Verbatim Theatre. We performed an exercise where we read a recent text message which we then had to perform to an audience. I have also devised my own script based on a dramatic love story between a divorced couple, which I gained inspiration from watching dramas, such as Malcom & Marie. We have learnt different techniques from practitioners such as Stanislavski and Brecht. I really challenged myself on this particular theory of subtext where I used this skill to channel my inner monologue and imagine myself in the position of my character. Under The Blue Sky is a modern bright and emotional triptych of love stories, a play based on the unrequited love of two friends, Nick and Helen who had slept together once but both clearly got different feelings for one another, Nick breaks the news that he's moving to a public school which crushes her. In order to play the character, Helen, I pushed myself into reading and researching the character’s emotions and motives throughout the play. At the start, I was reluctant on writing my own script as I aimed to focus on performing onstage, but after attempting to write my own piece of work, I began to enjoy the idea of creating characters, plots and scenarios which made me open minded to different fields in the performing industry whether its onstage or not. In order to understand the relevance of scriptwriting, I took the time to research different screenplays which led me to Common by Jimmy McGovern, a bleak and powerful drama about a concept of joint enterprise murder. Furthermore, my work off stage extends to production. For our adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" I contributed ideas to set design and different time eras that we could have portrayed the play in. I have had the privilege of watching theatre performances outside of college such as, The Crucible at National Theatre, The Old Bridge at Bush Theatre and Shades Of Pemberley: Black Girls Love Jane Austen Too at the Old Red Lion Theatre Pub. Watching these shows was a great opportunity for me and reminded me of why I love performing. I am certain that I would be a great addition to this course as my peers have commented on my strongest skills, such as good articulation and projection. I believe that studying Theatre would specifically take me into Film and TV acting, I also really enjoy singing so combining the both, would help put myself forward for more roles. Singing has been a major part of my life as I have been involved in choirs and singing productions outside of school, and have participated in singing showcases in college. Doing this helped me build my confidence and comfortability on stage for example when we performed Like There's No Tomorrow as a collaboration with National Theatre Connections. We were combined with the music students and participated in an exercise which was a way to help us get to know each other better, the first exercise was a game of would you rather, where we had to face a new person in front of you and answer the given questions. The second exercise was a continuation of facing someone new, one person would be given a post-it note with a profession in the creative arts and the other has to guess it in 20 questions. The role I was given was a casting director. We later sat down and went through a couple slides about being in creative arts and ways to get in contact with people who can help you. I hadn’t even began for schools let alone visiting them. I was still quite unsure… Later down the month, Shenagh had arranged a trip for my peers and I to visit Ros Bruford, a drama college in Sidcup. The introduction began at the reception where the tour guides showed us the memoirs of all the celebrities who attended and graduated the school. We headed towards  us around the building and the three different theatres where they hold performances.
