Ratliff defines closeness in music as "two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination". This is commonly known as harmonization, which I believe is a vital musical element. There are certain factions of music that rely on this element heavily, such as choir and acapella. Even though it can be easily spotted in the musical examples previously listed, it is also important for other genres. An example the Ratliff uses that I like is the analyzation of The Beatles, specifically the harmonization between John Lennon and Paul McCartney. In their song, "When I Get Home", they harmonize in what musicologist Ian McDonald calls an "eyeball-to-eyeball" harmony. I didn't fully understand what this meant until I saw a video of them performing this song. (See attached video) When they harmonized they did so on the same mic, putting them eyeball to eyeball. A musical work that I believe exemplifies Ratliff's definition of closeness is "Evolution of Music" by Pentatonix. At any given moment throughout the piece, at least two people are harmony.
