West Side Story - "America"

The musical West Side Story is not only one of Bernstein's most iconic pieces, but also one of the most notable works from the 20th century. Made in collaboration with Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Larents, and Jerome Robbins, this musical is a take on Romeo & Juliette set in 1950's New York City. This tale of tragic lovers marked a turning point in American theater and received nothing but praise once it premiered on Broadway in 1957. The tune "America" in particular illustrates both the beauty of the score and complex social issues within the plot.

Well. We love some Lenny Bernstein, so it's only natural that this song is a bop. The orchestrations are great as always and they add a lively tone to the piece, as mirrored by the energetic movement of the sung melody. Lyrically, there's such a nice balance of humor and sarcasm to balance some of the darker realities the characters are dealing with, and it adds depth to each of the characters while still adding levity. The dance break in the piece helps to drive home the high-spirited vibe of the written score and creates a wholesome, refreshing experience for the audience.
