Each slave was provided food, clothing and shelter. They had only received these essentials if they did their labor. They were distributed rations of food weekly. Usually the slaves got the hand me downs from the people they worked for. "Nevertheless, the kind of labor assigned, the quantity and quality of food and clothing received, the type of shelter provided, and the form of punishments dealt could lessen or increase the level of discomfort slaves had to endure." Slavery had been abolished. "Gone were the brutalities and indignities of slave life, the whippings and sexual assaults, the selling and forcible relocation of family members, the denial of education, wages, legal marriage, home ownership, and more" ("Life After Slavery for African Americans." Khan Academy. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017). Although, African Americans did not have to deal with the things they did before, they still had to deal with people being prejudice. Most black families lived in poverty even though they were free from slavery. African Americans found hope in church and in the community. Overall, after the Civil War blacks weren't slaves but their lives weren't perfect either.

Slaves had to decide whether to enlist or not. "At the onset of the Civil War, free black men rushed to volunteer for service with the Union forces" (Escott, Paul D. "African Americans In The Civil War." HistoryNet. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2017). Black men fought on both sides of the Civil War. After the war was over, the constitution was amended to free all slaves. Also, black men now had the right to vote. The Civil War was more like a break for slaves.
