The video focuses on how love and care, instead of physical traits, amongst members define a family. Regardless of how many differences there may be in culture, race, sexuality or physical abilities amongst families, they all share the common thread of love amongst each other. As teachers, we should focus on how love creates and binds all families in order to be inclusive with all of our students.

Hoffmann and Cowhey Readings

The Hoffmann reading purports that teachers need to be mindful of activities that involve personal information about students’ families instead of assuming that everyone has a traditional family structure. Cowhey’s article takes this mindfulness a step further by providing specific recommendations for teachers to ensure a productive dialogue regarding families, such as challenging stereotypes and using gender-neutral language. Both of these articles demonstrate that families are made of people who love one another without placing importance on the type of people involved.

A family is a group of 2 or more people who love and take care of each other. A family can include people of varying ages, cultures, physical abilities and genders. A family is not restricted to marital status or blood relation, and it can evolve over time by including more or fewer people. As long as the people within the unit love each other, it is considered a family.

The book I reviewed was King & King by Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland. The book is about a queen’s attempt to have her prince son marry a person of royalty in order for him to rule over their town as a king. The queen is initially frustrated with the process of finding a partner for her son because he is dissatisfied with every princess he meets from all over the globe. However, the prince eventually meets and falls in love with another prince. The two princes then marry and their families live happily ever after.

Representations of Family & Message

The authors and illustrators portray a different type of family unit in several ways. First, the queen and prince represent a single-mother family unit because there was no mention of a father who was already a king in the entire book. Secondly, the book also encourages multiculturalism in families by introducing the prince to princesses of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds as possible mates for him to wed. Finally, the book demonstrates families that include those of the LGBT community by showing the prince marry another prince as the conclusion of the story. Overall, the message this book communicated about families is that they can be very diverse but ultimately include people who love each other.

Book Review: Recommended for Classroom Library

I would add this book to my classroom library because of how openly and simplistically demonstrates the diversity of families. There are no negative connotations or political criticisms about the diversity the book illustrates, and it drives to the root of how families should be defined solely by love amongst its members.
