For me, the most relevant aspect of the competency standard is 12.3 because it is based on the principles of person-centred care, access and equity for different cultural groups, quality and safety, dignity and respect for migrants and refuses, and effective communication which is important to provide flexible and responsive care. First thing for me, I must provide respect throughout my nursing profession the influence of different culture and those people who are from refugee and migrant background because if I will talk about me, I am also an international student from different culture background And I can understand how they will feel if they get bias, inadequate communication and prejudices. Refugees may find it difficult to obtain and use healthcare services with confidence if they lack social support. To reduce health inequalities, cultural sensitivity is essential. It makes it easier to obtain high-quality medical treatment that is sensitive to and responsive to the requirements of patients from all backgrounds. It is important for all healthcare workers to follow ethical standards and principles to minimise culturally insensitive practices that can help to provide a better health outcome to refuses and migrant background people.
Reference
MIGRANT AND REFUGEE WOMEN'S HEALTH PARTNERSHIP(2019).

Country Focus - Afghanistan

Afghanistan's ongoing economic collapse following the Taliban takeover is a major factor in the humanitarian catastrophe that has intensified in the nation in 2022. The Australian Government should move quickly and do more to offer safety and leadership, says the Refugee Council of Australia, which is standing in solidarity with the Afghan people during this crisis.

Three common health concerns listed in the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide that are likely to be present in people arriving from Afghanistan are -

Low Vitamin D - Micronutrients including vitamin A, B group vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, iodine, and iron are frequently insufficient in the body. Women are more likely than men to be vitamin D deficient, most likely as a result of covering up for religious reasons and spending more time inside. Providing particular education about the benefits of Vitamin D can help them to solve this problem.

Helicobacter Pylori - Given the high incidence of Helicobacter pylori infection in developing nations, particularly in nations bordering Afghanistan, it is likely that a significant portion of Afghan migrants and refugees have the illness. Not only adults, but even children are also surviving from this disease. Like adult patients, children with H. pylori infection get treatment with amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and a proton-pump inhibitor.

Mental health - Due to the effects of war and relocation, mental health problems are also said to be common among the Afghan society. The Afghan community in Australia and throughout the world are extremely depression and anxious because of these incidents. When dealing with Afghan Australians, it's critical to comprehend the unique contexts and experiences of each person and to steer clear of generalisations about the whole group. There are some organizations such as Transcultural Mental health Line 1800 648 911, Mental Health Community Living Supports for Refugees (MH-CLSR), and NSW Refugee Health Service.

Reference
Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide (2023).

The Afghan refugee has been affected negatively by social determinants of health such as Food and housing insecurity, lack of education, unemployment, and challenges with health care access. Social determinants of health refer to non-medical factors determined by social and economic systems. Refugees in particular are a great risk of suffering from health disparities. Moreover, a lack of employment contributes to people struggling financially, however, they got job opportunities in Australia but also faced some challenges such as Insecure employment, discrimination, and social isolation.
Housing is another component that is increasingly recognized as critical factor that contribute to health outcomes that happened due to lack of social network.
Last but not least, I will talk about lack of education in Afghan refugee that is as a major social determinant of health because in this community, they banned education to women and girls and not allowed to go outside that put negative impacts on the health outcomes.

Reference
World Health Organization (2023).
