As Pi is on the verge of death he decides that submission to God will provide him salvation: "It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to god” (Martel 129). This occurs after having to leave the carnivorous island and his loss of hope results in him giving into God. His religious loyalty to Christianity allowed him to stay alive and as he finally gave himself to God he was given salvation.
