Discuss rotating anode x-rays tubes

Discuss X rays tube in Helical/spiral

Discuss tube envelope, anode assembly

Discuss Filtration

1. Rotating anode tubes are growing more popular in CT because they are able to produce a heterogenous beam of radiation. They are able to do this with a larger diameter anode disk and complementary focal spot sizes. These tubes can rotate at the speed of 3,600 to 10,000 revolutions per minute.
2. Helical CT allows the patient to lay stationary continuously moving through the gantry while the x-ray tube and detectors rotate continuously around the patient. This creates a helical, or spiral, rotation around the patients body. This technology has allowed CT scanners to advance from one slice at a time to scanning a volume of tissue.
3. The glass envelope is a vacuum that gives structural support and insulation to the high-voltage cathode and anode. The anode is thicker than normal anode disks. The anode assembly includes the disk, rotor stub and hub, the rotor, and bearing assembly. The anode disk has a granite base body that can withstand heat capacity ten times the limit of tungsten.
4. Filtration is the process of removing long-wavelength x-rays that only contribute to patient dose. These x-rays do not contribute to the CT image. The process of filtration increase the energy of the beam. The X-ray tube has 3 mm Al-equivalent of inherent filtration, and in modern CT scanners, added filtration is put in by using beam-shaping filtration, such as the filter and “bowtie” filter. These allow for a more uniform beam hits the detectors.
