One angle at this might be seen through the lens of popular media. Shows, movies, and games usually depict life-altering stakes in order to create a sense of purpose. I have always wondered if there is such noble energy in saving the world; what exists of nobility after the world is saved - an epilogue at most? This is something rarely seen in entertainment, and we see this in the lack of satisfaction in our current younger generation, where people constantly switch majors/careers because they deem what they are doing is not making an "impact."

I've observed that people who are "spiritual, but not religious" follow a system of morality that combines John Stuart Mill's harm principle with Benthemite logic + hedonism - but "happiness" comes in two forms: Soft and hard, I would call them. Soft happiness is what people say when they mean being happy, and hard happiness is just what releases dopamine, i.e having fun and experiencing pleasure. People try to "live life to the fullest" but that just means hedonism when you come down to it.
