The diseases that most frequently warrant hospice or palliative care for animals are: 
  • Cancer
  • Incurable organ failure [kidneys, liver and heart are common examples]
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Progressive neurological conditions, including dementia
  • Senior pets reaching the end of life

It is an option which can be both over, and underused. Euthanasia is a humane option for animals who are suffering and where little can be done to alleviate their suffering. Whilst euthanasia can be used on healthy animals where they are no longer wanted (overused), owners can often avoid making that decision, initially for very understandable reasons (underused), but which can lead to the owner effectively neglecting the welfare of the animal. Being capable of determining life or death of a living being should not be an easy choice, but it is sometimes too difficult a choice to make for some owners.

It’s a human perspective of how the dog thinks, but it had an effect on me and how wonderful to make the last days so special.
