Title: The Devil Wears Prada
Author: Lauren Weisberger
Publisher: Crown/Archetype
Year: 2004
Summary:
Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child.

The Devil Wears Prada gives a rich and hilarious new meaning to complaints about "The Boss from Hell." Narrated in Andrea’s smart, refreshingly disarming voice, it traces a deep, dark, devilish view of life at the top only hinted at in gossip columns and over Cosmopolitans at the trendiest cocktail parties. From sending the latest, not-yet-in-stores Harry Potter to Miranda’s children in Paris by private jet, to locating an unnamed antique store where Miranda had at some point admired a vintage dresser, to serving lattes to Miranda at precisely the piping hot temperature she prefers, Andrea is sorely tested each and every day—and often late into the night with orders barked over the phone. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul.

Comments:
A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses and the basis for the major motion picture starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.

Title: A Single Shard
Author: Linda Sue Park
Publisher: Dell Yearling
Year: 2001
Summary:
A Single Shard, is about a twelve year old boy who lives in a small town called Ch’ulp’o, located in Korea. The twelve year old boy, Tree-ear, is an orphan who lives under a bridge with his protector, Crane-man. They pick up scraps from the garbage and scavenge honorably by not stealing from markets.

Ch’ulp’o is known for its pottery. Ch’ulp’o is located in a clay region allowing potters to perfect their works. Tree-ear enjoyed hiding in bushes and watching an old pottery master, work. Min makes his pottery perfect but he is one of the slowest workers in the village.

One day, Tree-Ear finds Min away from home and proceeds to go into his yard and observe his works more closely. As Tree-Ear is looking through his pottery, he accidently drops one. When Min returns home, he is furious to find one of his pieces shattered. Tree-ear offers to pay him back by working for him nine consecutive days. Tree-Ear, hoping he will be taught how to be a potter, ends up cutting firewood. This job was difficult for Tree-Ear leaving him with many cuts, and blisters on his hands. When Tree-Ear is done working for Min, he returns to Crane-Man and has a meal of scavenged food. When Tree-Ear finishes his nine days of work, he ends up offering to work for Min permanently. Min accepts this offer but refuses to pay money. Tree-Ear still hopes Min will teach him how to make pots. Min sends Tree-Ear to go down to the clay pits and return home with clay. Each day Min’s wife makes Tree-Ear a mid-day meal. Tree-Ear saves half of his meal each day to bring back to Crane-Man. In time Min’s wife realizes what Tree-Ear is doing with his mid-day meal and fills his lunch pot up while Tree-Ear is not looking, so he has a full meal to take back Crane Man.

Tree-Ear learns that Min struggles to earn money because of how slow he works. While scavenging,Tree-Ear noticed another potter working in secret, Kang, who invented a new way to make pots more beautiful before anyone else does. He knows that this technique will become a popular method.

Word gets around that an emissary of the king is going to award royal commissions to the best potter. Everyone in town begin making their best works to win. When the the king’s emissary arrives to town, everyone sets up their work. Min has the smallest display but also receives a lot of attention from the emissary. The emissary leaves but returns a month later. Min begins working and when he is finished with his product, there are brown stains covering the pots and he has to restart. The emissary arrives before Min can finish, but offers Min a commision if he brings one of his completed pieces to the capital. Min said he can’t accept because he is too old to travel a long distance. Tree-Ear ends up offering to do this for Min. While Tree-ear is making his way toward Songdo, he gets attacked by two robbers. The robbers take his his jigga, a backpack made out of reeds, and toss over a cliff. Tree-Ear climbs down the cliff and retrieves a single shard left from one of the broken pots. He continues walking to the emissary and shows them the broken shard of his master’s work. The emissary offers a commission.

Tree-Ear travels back to Ch’ulp’o where he gives Min and his wife the good news about the commission. Min talks to Tree-Ear and tells him about the Crane-Man’s death. This news devisates Tree-Ear. Min’s wife asks Tree-Ear to live with them under the condition that his new name is HyungPil, which means he is a brother to the deceased son of Min and his wife. Min tells Tree-Ear, now Hyung-Pil, that he wants to teach Hyung-Pil the work of pottery, as he would have done with his own son.

Comments:
A heart-warming, and at times distressing, story about a 12 year old orphaned boy in Korea in the 12th century.

Title: Mister Monday
Author: Garth Nix
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Year: 2003
Summary:
Mister Monday is about a boy named Arthur, who has asthma. One Monday, he is running and has an asthma attack, which would have killed him, except that two men appeared in front on him and gave him two things: and small green book they called the Atlas and a clock hand they called the Key. The Key saves Arthur, and he doesn't die. He goes to the hospital and stays there for a while, finally getting back to school the next Monday, when he is attacked by men with dog faces. The school blows up, and Arthur runs into a weird house nearby. He goes through a door and ends up in a town that looks like it's from a long time ago, with gas lamps and horse carriages. He meets a girl named Suzy Turquoise Blue, who has a frog in her throat that's really a part of the Will, which is the supreme will of the creator of the house he's in. Arthur learns about the seven Days, which all rule different parts of the house. He is currently in the Lower Reaches, which is ruled by Mister Monday, who gave him the Key. Unfortunately, the place Arthur is in is searched by Monday's Noon, or his main servant, and Arthur is thrown into a small pit, where he finds a being known as the Old One, who is chained up. Arthur learns how to use the Key and also how to get out using the Improbable Stair, which is a magic staircase that only wielders of the Key can use. Arthur gets to Monday's Dayroom, where the Will teaches him how to claim the Key for himself and defeat Mister Monday. Arthur manages to defeat Mister Monday with the help of Suzy, who comes along. Arthur appoints the Will as the ruler of the Lower Reaches, because he wants to go home and be normal. He goes home, and everyone is happy until the next book.

Comments:
A very interesting book that is confusing at times, very quick, and really good! A story about a boy turned king, and his struggle to get there.

Title - Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans
Author - Brian Kilmeade
Publisher - Penguin Publishing Group
Year 2017
Summary
This book was about America in the time of the War of 1812 and Andrew Jackson's role as a general which later in history he will be an American hero. On June 1st 1812 The U.S. had declared war on the British. It has been 29 years since the American revolution was fought. The War of 1812 in the beginning was going on the British side. In Washington no one had experience on anything to with war and neither did the President. Most of the media back then called this war Mr. Madison's War which means this war was declared mainly by his own sake. Jackson wanted to take 2,500 of his men and march up to Canada to fight the British but the leaders in Washington never took upon that order. Jackson and his men were marching to New Orleans he got a letter saying that he and his men were dismissed from their public service.
In mid 1814 The British have taken over Washington DC burning everything including the White House and the Capital Building. Andrew Jackson thought the President was forgetting about one important target for the British and that was New Orleans. Without Jackson trying to defend New Orleans the British would have taken not only the North side of the U.S. but the west side as well controlling all of the Louisiana purchase.

Comments :
I thought this book was really interesting it gave detail on what was happening durning the War of 1812. It told the story about Andrew Jackson and how he wanted to keep his troops heading to New Orleans but the President told him not too. It also tells you what would of happened if Andrew Jackson did not march to New Orleans trying to defend it. The book gives you an idea that if this battle was won by the British they would of won the war.

Jesse’s girl takes place in Hundred Oaks, Tennessee. The main character Maya is a girl who doesn’t fit in at her high school. She loves motorcycles, books, and most of all music. Maya is very good at playing the guitar but lacks the most important thing, confidence. She would rather have the spotlight shine on her bandmates and not her. Maya finally gets an oppurtunity to shadow Jesse Scott, country music’s hottest chart guitarist. Maya wants to learn things about country music but instead she learns Jesse isn’t all that people thinks he is.

The first time Jesse and Maya meet, they don’t connect very well. Jesse
assumes that Maya is just using him to get a record deal. Jesse is a guy who only does what he wants and doesn’t care about other people. They both soon realize that they both have done wrong and that they should just be friends. During the shadow day, Jesse decides not to follow the schedule and experience Nashville on their own terms.

The second half of the book focuses on how they both have hard lives and they both have a journey to follow. Maya has a hard life because she has a lack of confidence and her family doesn’t support all of her life decisions. Jesse on the other hand, performs at different places but wants to retire so that he can grow closer to his family. Maya and Jesse work together to help each other and create a little love friendship. they fall in love with each other, but what happens when Maya wants to enter into American Idol and finds out the Jesse is one of the judges. I guess you will have to read the book to find out.

I thought this book was a great book to read because it teaches young readers like me to have faith and confidence in yourself when you attempt to do anything. This book helped me have confidence in myself when I dance on stage. This book also taught me how to form a good relationship with a person who doesn’ have many friends and it makes me want to become friends with a lot Morehouse people.

Title: One of Us is Lying
Author: Karen McManus
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Year: 2017

Summary

Everyone at Bayview High is scared that they will be featured on the school gossip app, About That, run by the infamous Simon Keller, but no one is more scared of it than Addy, Bronwyn, Nate and Cooper. These four students were all in detention one day with Simon when he died because of an allergic reaction to peanut oil that got into his water bottle. The students all become murder suspects when the police find out that all four of the students were featured in an issue of About That Simon was going to post before he died. During the investigation the police conclude that the only way peanut oil could have gotten into Simon’s water was if one of the students in the room had put it there. Soon an anonymous user on the About That app post the issue exposing all of the students that were in detention that day. All of their secrets are now out in the open and their lives start to fall apart. The only people they can turn to now are each other. Soon, Nate, the troublemaker of the group, is framed. Simon’s Epipen is found in his locker, and the police arrest him. The rest of the group is determined to prove that Nate is guilty, and they hire a lawyer. In the end the lawyers and police find out that, in fact, Simon’s death was not a murder but a suicide that was very well thought out.

I thought this book was a very good read. It taught me that you should not spread gossip, even if it is true, because it could have a really big impact on someone's life. It also made me think about how much of what I hear people say about each other is true or not, and that I should not assume something is true just because someone says so. This book was very suspenseful and interesting and I would highly recommend it to anyone I know.

At some parts, the book was confusing and I didn’t really know what was going on. This book has a great message to fight for what you believe in and to take chances. The story was very interesting and had many twists and turns. I would recommend this book.

Forstchen
Publisher - Tom Doherty Associates
Year - 2009

Summary:

A former military Colonel, John Matherson, is having a normal afternoon with his daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer, when all the electrical equipment shuts down. As the days go by, John notices something is wrong and asks the mayor of the town to gather a town meeting. While at the meeting, John suggested to them that the U.S.A. may have been attacked by an EMP (Electric Magnetic Pulse) strike. Soon after, the citizens living in the town wanted to know what was going on. When they were told, they raided drug stores, grocery stores, and cars. The town council soon realized that all food and medical equipment that was still left had to be collected and stored in a local gym. Months later, they began to run short on food and decided to give out rations to their local militia as well as to those who had to farm and dig graves. The town then encountered the huge threat of the Posse, a group of people that raided cities and killed anyone in their path. John and the militia gathered up as many people as possible and soon fought the Posse and ended up winning, but at a very high price. The mayor of the town was killed in the fight and soon, John was nominated to be the mayor. During the period when John was mayor, his daughter, Jennifer, dies because of the lack of medicine for her type 1 diabetes.

Brianne Manner
Brianne Manner
Title: Jessie’s Girl
Author: Miranda Kenneally
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Year: 2015

Summary:

The book I read is called Jesse’s Girl.

I would suggest this book to someone who wants a good read and a book that takes through an adventure that a person could never forget.

Nick Tilghman
Nick Tilghman

Name - Jenna Bondyra
Name - Jenna Bondyra
Title - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Author - C. The next day Stanley and the other people where to get to work by digging a hole as long and deep as the shovel they were given. Like many new inmate story the new guys gets tossed around but luckily Stanley met a boy named Hector Zeroni who was there and stood up for him. After a while hector was fed up with working there and question the warrens motives so they run way to find out why all the holes.

Comments
I think is a great read. It is full of different things that come together half way through or at the end. At first it as a little slow but maybe that's just my opinion. I encourage you to give it a try and you might find a fun new book to read

Name - Stephen Snyder
Name - Stephen Snyder

Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym.

Title: Murder on the Orient Express
Author: Agatha Christie
Publisher: HarperCollins
Year: 1934
Summary:
Hercule Poirot, the famous Belgian detective, was on his way from Istanbul, Turkey to London and looking for a easy trip to clear his head. He ran into his old friend, M. Bouc, who worked for the Wagon Lit Train Company, and he invited Poirot to take a trip on the Orient Express. The first night was calm and quiet, however, the second night Poirot had trouble sleeping because he kept hearing loud noises. In the morning, Poirot found out that the train had been stopped because of snow and the wealthy American, Mr. Ratchett had been killed. After examining Ratchett’s room, Poirot, Mr. Bouc, and a doctor named Dr. Constantine uncovered many clues such as twelve stab wounds in the body, a handkerchief and pipe cleaner left on the floor. Then, Poirot and the other two men interviewed the rest of the passengers, Mary Debenham, Colonel Arbuthnot, Hector MacQueen, Princess Dragomiroff, Mrs. Hubbard, Greta Ohlsson, Edward Masterman, Antonio Foscarelli, Hildegarde Schmidt, Countess Andrenyi, Count Andrenyi, and Mr. Hardman. Based on the clues and interviews, Poirot concluded that the murder or murderers were passengers on the train. During his investigation, Poirot also realized that all of the passengers were connected to the baby that Rachett killed years ago. To find out who killed Mr. Rachett you have to read the book!

Comments:
I thought Murder on the Orient Express was an amazing mystery! Hercule Poirot was my favorite character in the story because he could think of the solution to the mystery just by sitting down and thinking. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time reading it because I couldn't figure out who the murder was. The ending was my favorite part because it had a huge plot twist. I also loved the Murder on the Orient Express movie that came out last year.

Title: Inside the walls of Troy
Author: Clemence McLaren
Publisher: Laurel Leaf Books
Year:1998
Summary:
Helen is a princess of Sparta and Helen’s great beauty makes her the prize of Greece. However, since she is only twelve years old she is more interested in horses and games than in her beauty. But before she even knows, she is kidnapped by Theseus, the ruler of Athens, because of her beauty. Through Theseus, Helen learns that her only value lies in her beauty and her only goal in life should be to be a good wife. Theseus then tells Helen she must transform herself into exactly what her husband wants her to be, giving up her own personality in the process. Eventually Helen is bought back by her brothers and returned to her home in Sparta, but by that time rumors of her kidnapping have spread and the most powerful princes of Greece are making their way to Sparta to attempt to win her before anyone else can. Eventually Helen is given to Menelaus, brother to the King Agamemnon, because he is the wealthiest and most powerful of her choices. Helen has come to look at her beauty is a burden because it prevents her from being allowed to make her own decisions and choose the path of her own life. Her beauty makes her into a object because that is all any man ever sees. However, Helen begins to appreciate her life with Menelaus because she realizes that he really does love her for who she is and when they have a daughter he becomes an good father. However, just as Helen is deciding that her life is actually pretty good, Paris of Troy arrives and Helen is taken away by the beauty of him. Helen abandons her position as a wife, mother, and queen of Sparta when she falls in love with the Trojan prince. And her leaving sets in motion the events that will eventually lead to the Trojan War. However, it is not Helen's actions that ultimately cause the war. Her actions are used as an excuse. The cause of the war is the pride of the Kings of Greece and Troy, and it is the pride of men that aggravates the slaughter and massacres of the Trojan War.
Comments: I thought that "Insides the Walls of Troy" was a good book but there was one problem. There was too much drama and stupid stuff told from the girls point of view. I think it would have been told a lot better if it was told in Hector's, Achilles's, or Paris's.

Name - Macklan O'Brien
Title- Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Author- J.R.R Tolkien
Year of publication- July 29, 1954
Summary-
In the world of Middle Earth there once lived a hobbit. His name was Bilbo Baggins. While on a quest Bilbo found one of the rings of power lost many years ago. This gave him the ability to become completely invisible to everyone and everything. As Bilbo gets older he must hand the ring down to his nephew Frodo Baggins. Frodo isn't sure what is so special about the ring before the Nazgul start tracking him. The Nazgul were once great kings who had rings of their own which over time turned them into utter slaves for the dark lord Sauron. When caught in a desperate situation he puts the ring and discovers it's true capabilities. Meanwhile his friend Gandalf, the great wizard, instructs Frodo to take the ring and cast it into the fires of Mount Doom. During Frodo's quest he slowly picks up me companions such as his friend Samuel and the ranger.During his adventure Sauron is slowly rebuilding his army of viscous orcs. They are twice as strong as a man and never give up until they've satisfied their master. During their quest a massive amount of orcs attacks and they lose some great allies. The journey has become to dangerous for all of them so Frodo takes it upon himself to take the ring to Mount Doom. His friend Sam refused to let him go alone because of the promise he once made Gandalf swearing to always protect Frodo. The pair of companions has a lot of Middle Earth to go before the book ends. This has been my summary of J.R.R Tolkien The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
