A local legend from Celrà, Catalonia, Spain

Once upon a time in a small village called Celrà (Catalonia, Spain) there was an important man. He was the Count Bernat. He was married to a woman from the village. Some time after, his wife fell in love with another man and when Bernat found out, he went to talk to the moon. He asked the moon if she could get into her bed to make her fall in love with him again. The moon accepted the idea but there was a problem, she was too big for the bed. Bernat answered: I will ask all the residents of Celrà to make an enormous bed for you. The moon accepted on condition: Before the citizens have made the bed, you'll come every night to visit me. Many days after goting to visit the moon every night, Bernat became an owl. He was called the cuckolded owl.

In the Archaeological Museum of Karditsa there is a representation of a tree with offerings from the Sacred Grove of Athena Itonia. This sanctuary has a “double meaning”: it is the Sanctuary of all Thessalians, and the cult place of a deity of purely Thessalian origin. This goddess was Itonia, a deity of the Underworld. Apart from the Sanctuary of Filia, two more sanctuaries are known to us which are connected to Itonia: one on Amorgos island and the other in Boeotia. The sanctuary of Boeotia was built by inhabitants of Thessaly, when they were forced to abandon their homes at the end of the Mycenaean era, fleeing from the Thessalian tribes coming from Epirus. The Thessalian conquerors respected the sanctity of the area. Eventually the sanctuary of Itonia became a pan-thessalian sanctuary, and gradually Itonia, a previously independent deity, became attached to Athena, thus evolving from a goddess of the Underworld to a goddess of war: Itonia Athena.

The ancient Greeks used to make offers to their Gods. One of their religion practices was to put on trees close to the Temple of God different small items, like vases.

Responsible students: Thomas Karageorgos & Konstantinos Kaisis
