This week I focused my efforts on one of the communication channels in the scheme of listening and writing. What I have learned was that passive listening is just as productive in aiding comprehension as it is good writing. This way I make sure to have some points or at least nonverbal communication cues that give substance to my writing. Using the technique of summarizing after talk helped me to grasp better and write more clearly. I want to continue centralizing reflective listening in the further improvement of my writing skills in the future.

This week, I looked at the options of verbal and non verbal communication and their importance in the process of relaying messages. There is a direct correlation that I found with non-verbal communication and especially posture and facial expressions on the way the content that is being relayed verbally is received. Knowing my own gestures facilitated conscious response, while studying my interlocutors’ nonverbal cues informed me about their interest level. In regard to these elements in future interactions, I hope to increase my subsequent awareness to effectively promote better exchange and relation.

Week five was devoted to interpersonal strategies and skills that are crucial for interpersonal communications. I also had a chance to use pro-empirical techniques such as rapport-building and empathy with my colleagues which result to improvement of the relations. I understood how and why people are different and how and when it is necessary to change the patterns of communication with the interlocutor. In future, I will make sure to employ conflict solving techniques, and use feedback regarding my people skills with other members of the team in order to improve overall cooperation.

This week has been dedicated to the topic of interviewing where I covered both the preparation and the conducting stages. I realized that after the interview one has to ask the right questions, but he has to listen carefully to the answers too. Applying open-ended questions proved useful for conducting deeper analysis of the thoughts of participants. To further develop my interviews skills I will aim to improve more advanced and where possible engage in other, where I will be able to practice and gather or discover useful information, and also to practice on how I can best embrace other people.

This week I chose to learn how to distinguish effective meetings from the inefficient ones. Key takeaways include:

1.Clear Objectives:

Every meeting should also have an agenda and objectives for it to be most effective. This makes the participants to remain attentive and makes the meeting worthwhile.

2.Time Management:

Start and end on time. He who sets a schedule beforehand helps avoid wandering off the topic mainly because people should not waste those other person’s time.

3.Active Participation:

Particularly, foster the idea that all the participants are stakeholders in the conversation. A good meeting is one that provides the platform for the participants to express him/ herself in the way he/she wants.

4.Action Items:

End the debate with course of action and specific tasks. It keeps people honest and helps to instill some measure of movement when it comes to projects.

Towards the end of the course, I look at how I have evolved through the subject in terms of development in communication, writing and even speech. There were times when some of these concepts were understandable but probably the assignments and the group work together with the discussions helped a great deal in relating and developing them. I have gained fundamental skills that involve the way information and knowledge are conveyed and shared, orally, formally and in groups.

The creation of my e-portfolio was very useful for me as a mechanism for reflecting upon the learning process in the course. First, it was somewhat difficult to organize the content, but now it has evolved into a timeline of knowledge acquisition. In the future, I will also add new work items and reflection to my e-portfolio in order to illustrate my changed communication skills and be a portfolio for the development to the jobs I am applying in the future.
