Militarism was one of the major causes of world war one. Before the war when nationalism was growing through Europe it led to governments spending more money on their army. When the countries started to do this their military grew and it gave them more power. With this new power it allowed countries the chance now to take over more land, leading to war.

In 1914 all the great nations started to create a strong army except for Britain since they already had the strongest navy. Their navy protected ships, controlled trade routes, and colonial ports. Due to the British having most of the power this made other countries envy them, leading to countries starting to fight with each other for the land.

With the spread of militarism this made citizens feel more patriotic and more compelled to join the army. This patriotism made countries' militaries stronger and held more energy to want to take over land. The creation of stronger armies also scared some citizens and led to alliances being formed so they wouldn’t have to worry. These alliances make countries feel more confident in their armies to take over more land.

Otto Von Bismark attempted to isolate France by allying with Austria-Hungary to form a Dual Alliance. Later, Italy joined the group to form the Triple Alliance and Germany made a pact with Russia as well. Bismarck knew that Austria and Russia were rivals and that his alliances may break down. The treaty with Russia was allowed to lapse, but Russia responded by allying with France. This alliance would force Germany to fight a two front war.
